I have been seeing more coyotes this year... My neighbor keeps donkeys to keep them away from his livestock, as his fence isn't really designed for animals that small/cunning. If I see one in my yard, I fire off a warning shot and they run off... If it keeps coming back, then I aim my shot(s) and grab a shovel. No need to wake up your neighbors, a 22 will do the job
 
I live in Lake Oswego with a greenway behind me, a few months back my 18 y.o. son and our dog were outside in the evening time (probably smokin, darn kids) and our dog was attacked by a coyote. She had 3 or 4 bite marks on her hind quarters, I think she survived because she is so darn fast.
