Vaseline cotton balls. Here's a link to show you how to do this. I mean, how hard can it be that you need help slopping some vaseline on a cotton ball? Well, here it is anyhow:
Using Vaseline Cotton Balls as a Fire Starter
A few months too late, but cut christmas trees left out after christmas season makes for fine fatwood sources, you just chop the bottom rounds and branches, then store them. Well, if you allow the trees to stay upright while drying out/letting the resin/sap/pitch run down to the bottom of the trunk, that makes for a perfect area for fatwood, especially if you age it over a period of a few months. Otherwise, it's an ax and looking around the woodlands for the old rotting stumps and hacking into the bottoms or where the roots are, and finding the fatwood. natural is best, but the harvested ones can be okay, and they DO keep a flame going pretty good. You can tell its primo by the turpentine smell and a reddish coloring from a pine stump, as opposed to normal yellowish pine and pine smell......
I use maple bark that has been shave it to shreds with one of my knives. So I was wondering tinder you all use for your flint or ferrocerium rod? Do you just find stuff around where you are like dry grass (good luck in winter). Or do you carry some with you? If you do carry some around with you I'd be interested to know what you carry them in.
I recently got a new fire starter for my EDC. But it doesn't have an open flame so I need some ideas for tinder (either to find or carry). One thing that came to mind, and I can't believe I didn't think of the earlier, is that I could just use some of my hair. Obviously I'd only do that in SHTF and not camping.
So I guess the question isn't only what do you use but also what would you use?
