Sorry Jordan, but I will be taking issue with much of what you have just said.
.First. "The Hyuga operates helicopters not attack planes." Please refer to the following: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=cae_1188504476 In case you do not recognise the martial music playing in the background, it is the theme song used by the WWII Imperial Navy, as they too sailed from Yokohama.
Please explain to me how this massive carrier could not use attack aircraft, Sea Harrier or other VTOL aircraft at least. It only would take the desire to deploy them.
.Second. The build up of the JMSDF (a euphamism, the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force) is contrary to the stated values of the Japanese constitution, which is supposed to prohibit the use of offensive weapons.
By using the term "self defense", they have skirted around the offensive weapons provision of their own constitutuion ! If you are hit by a missile that says 'defensive' instead of "offensive" you are just as dead.
This has all been observed before. In the 1920's, the nations with major naval assets (including Japan, US, Great Britain, etc) were signatories of the naval limitation treaty, which limited each nation to a specific number of each type warship. The Imperial Navy (IJN) immediately embarked on a program of "skirting" the treaty, leaving large weapons off of the newer large ships, until the time came to ignore the treaty all together. Then, all they needed to do was to upgrade the weapons, much in the same way that a only a few simple mods would be needed with the new Hyuga.
Third "If you are worried about Japan going fascist again, the facts do not seem to support your theory"
No, I am not predicting "zeros at dawn" or a scenario of that nature. However, just because of the fact that Japan is making a big socialist turn at present, doesn't infer continued pacifism, nor does it preclude the potential of aggression in the region. Socialist governments have started wars throughout history. If you care to examine the parallels, we find the US in much the same condition as it was in the thirties, with Japan showing a marked increase in military capabilities, much of it cloaked in double-speak, then and now.
.In closing Jordan, it was certainly not my intention to be insulting of your Japanese heritage. Indeed, I consider myself a student of the Nihon culture.
