Id plumb a pressurized tank in line that your water flows out to your house and gets refilled as you use water. That way the water is never stagnant and in the event of a shtf you'd be starting out with fresh water.

This is a wonderful idea. Not being a plumber, could I simply plumb a tank before my hot water heater, so that water leaves my reserve tank (out a top exit, I'm assuming) and in to my heater? I may make this a project once the weather breaks.

That's how I did it (in my mind, LOL). I haven't done it yet but you pretty much nailed how I was thinking how to.
