I wrote to Doc Hastings. I used the "discrimination against handicapped" tactic. No knives which can be opened with only one hand. No fixed blades allowed in many places.

The first thing Dictators do is disarm the citizens. Take away their Guns, Knives, and any weapons. Then you can run the country with out any protest.

Why do you think the 2nd Amendment was written? To be able to STAND AGAINST a Tyrannical government. The Government knows this. SIMPLE...Disarm THEM so they can't resist government control.

They better BAN FORKS too! I'm deadly with a dinner FORK!

can someone please riddle me this: on WHAT AUTHORITY can this particular federal agency dictate a definition that will usurp the authority of courts and legislations nationwide? And WHY does no one step up to such stupidity and call their bluff? Government wonks gone bonkers.

The back bone of the entire US constitution is the 2nd ammendment. Without that you have NO other rights. So now they want your knives too. I support my right to keep and bare knives.

I just got off of the phone with Benchmade and they informed me that this is very real. They are trying to pass this without Congress. Benchmade said that they until around the end of this month to plead their case.

I am waiting for a response from our Congressmen to answer that question. It seams that things are happening at a very fast pace. Maybe a Knife Czar. Who knows. Benchmade and the knife and tool institute are working on it. What ever is happening is happening pretty fast.

With all the knife companies in Oregon I would hope that the Oregon congressmen would be getting flooded with letters and phone calls...

I am not a big knife person, but who do we have?
    Benchmade
    Leatherman
    Gerber
    CRKT
    others?

Here is the letter that I received from Benchmade.

U.S. Customs Wants To Ban Your Pocket Knife

    Dear JACK LEGG,
Benchmade Knife Company, in support with The American Knife and Tool Institute (AKTI) opposes U.S. Customs' attempt to classify assisted-opening knives and all one-hand-opening knives as switchblades.
U.S. Customs proposes to bypass Congress and expand the switchblade definition to include all knives that open with one hand. These include multi-tools, traditional pocket knives, one-hand openers, and assisted-openers.
More than 35 million law-abiding Americans now own one-hand-opening knives in one of the above four categories.
The majority of Americans who carry and use one-hand-openers every day need them for their jobs. They use them to save lives as well as for scores of recreational activities.
If U.S. Customs succeeds, it could lead to effectively banning all folding knives from interstate commerce.
We're asking you to register your opposition to the U.S. Customs' plan (19 CFR Part 177) to re-classify assisted openers and all folding knives.

Please address your comments to arrive at Customs by June 21, 2009.

    19 CFR Part 177

After hearing about the customs dept plan I sent an e-mail to Peter Defazio. I have received a reply stating he has asked customs to extend the public comment period so he has time to consult with his constituents about this issue.

He has phrased his opposition as a job lose issue for Oregon......works for me. Maybe someone from a Oregon Knife company can post the e-mail, my scanner is broken or I would post the whole letter myself.

Quick action from Peter on behalf of Oregonians jobs and weapons rights.
