Drool!!!

WOW, that's a beauty!!! So, the recoil sounds bad to the bone! Is that true?
My 15 year old 125lb daughter rocked through a box and a half of 45-70 ammo with it down at Salmonberry recently. She said her shoulder was a little tender but otherwise no problem. (she was also hogging my AK...pbbbfft!)

BTW - Any of the choices will work with elk if the hunter does his/her part.

There is a legacy .30-30 in my family. Story goes my maternal grandfather, who was a hunter/outdoorsman back in the era when many people hunted to support their family, bought it from a Trask Native American for $5 and a bottle of whiskey.

It has a 24" (IIRC) octagon barrel. My grandfather took bear, elk and deer with that rifle in the days before whiz bang magnums. He was in both WW1 and WWII as a merchant marine.

So I don't think you will go wrong with any choice between .30-30, .45-70 and .308 - obviously I like them all as I have them all, and more.

in ways this kind of choice is similar to recruiting others to make determination whether whether YOU will be better served with an economic 6 cylinder, a small block V8 or the lurking monsterous 454 in your next pick up....

Should have got a V8.......

Im not familiar with a lever .308. I assume they don't make them because all of the rounds have points that could set off the round in front of it if stacked in a tube.

That's why .308's are either simi automatic or bolt action that feed from a mag of some kind (fixed or detachable).

The 30-30 was made to stack in a tube of a lever action.

.308 recoil isn't bad for most people.

If your going to get a lever gun for fun, I would suggest a .22lr or .357(so you can shoot .38sp as well). Would be cheaper then a 30-30 for ammo.

If your dear hunting only then buy the 30-30 if you gotta have a lever gun.
