I have wasted much of my adult life working, it would be nice to have a couple of decades at the end, where working wasn't a priority.

That is a very worthwhile goal. I retired 15 years ago and was able to enjoy about 10 years of my time being my own before health issues began to catch up with me. They were 10 pretty good years of doing what I wanted to do. I think it was the right choice, and I hope you get to enjoy the same.
