Then the "piston kits" are not true piston action?o_O

They are "true" piston actions, just a different piston configuration.

Whether its a piston or DI is somewhat irrelevant to the way it operates.

You just said, effectively, "How it operates is irrelevant to the way it operates."

There's a difference between something acting like a piston and it actually being a piston. At the end of the day the AR's gas system is more like DI than piston.

No. No, it doesn't. It's not at all, even a little bit "like" direct-impingement. One part moves inside a second part, because of gas pressure that's inside the second. That makes it a gas piston system. It quacks, flaps, and waddles –– as obviously a duck as anything possibly could be –– yet you're arguing it's somehow not a duck.

What I said is trying to argue whether its DI or a piston is irrelevant because at the end of the day it still acts like a DI.

So, what you're saying is that the gas does NOT go through the gas tube and into the BCG like a direct impingement system?

While we're taking whacks at the dead beast....

The thing that the AK will never have is the modularity that the AR owns.
Take a look at a current AK, and then a current AR/M4.
Which one looks like a 21st century weapon ?

Neither. SAIAUG-A3-M1-1.5X-WHITE.jpg

Honestly, the AKs we have here aren't as modular as some of the newer designs. But I doubt we'd get any of the newer designs. The AK market not being as big as the AR market doesn't help either.
