This was a cool project I got to help out with. The factory M96 barrels feature an integral compensator that is non-removable and not very similar to the one used on the original Stoner model 63 rifle. The customer requested the barrel be threaded 1/2-28 so he could run it suppressed, or with a more historically accurate birdcage flash hider.

I started by removing the gas block. The taper pins were pounded out, and the gas block came off pretty easy. Off to the horizontal bandsaw.... I cut off just enough of the comp so that when I cut the threads, a nice shoulder would remain.

The barrel was mounted in my fixture on the lathe and indicated in. As usual, I use my long needle test indicator to dial off the rifling to ensure concentric threads.

The saw cut was cleaned up and an 11° crown added. The threads were then single point cut. Now you can see that flared shoulder I intended on leaving.

Here is the finished product! The customer sent me the last two pics after it was all assembled. Pretty snazzy. Someday I hope to have one in my collection.

Very nice work! I attempted to cut some 1/2-28 threads in a Ruger barrel for a charger build. They ended up pretty nicely cut……..in reverse, LOL. We realized the machine should have been "pushing" and not pulling the cutter. Was good practice but for nice guns, I'll leave it to a pro like yourself.

PM incoming about a project.
