A puppet specialist for the Broadway play The Lion King has been arrested in New York for using the theater's 3D printer to make a gun. I expect we'll be seeing more of this as the technology becomes more common. I don't care much for "plastic guns," but if a ban comes I'm getting a printer.

'Lion King' Puppet Specialist Charged With Manufacturing 3-D Printed Gun at Theater

"The execution and design is still so progressive that no matter how much you know, there's always more to learn," he said at the time.

The genie can't be put back in the bottle on this but it's no different than say making Meth. Sure the recipe is out there and free to read. If you get caught making some it's hard to feel bad for you. Since this guy lived in one of the top anti gun states I find it real hard to believe he would actually think this was OK to do. Now if he has the money and wants to take the time to fight it through the courts for years? He may well win but at what cost to him? There is going to be more and more "passing laws against" doing this. Do I like it? No. Does it make it right they just pass a law? No. If you live in a state that makes these illegal and you want to make one anyway? Well you know you are taking a risk.

I disagree-- meth is illegal, full stop. Printing a firearm is legal. Now the judgement shown by our budding rebel to make a gun at work, that's another story.

See this is just what I meant. "Making meth is illegal". Really? Why? Oh you mean someone passes a law?
So now in your opinion printing a gun is perfectly legal. Great, what did they arrest him for? I guess the Cops made up something from fairy dust? If so fantastic, he can now sue. I don't like a lot of the laws that get passed. Pretending like they do not exist because I do not like them does not make them vanish. As I said if he chooses to fight this, maybe for years, he may well win. You offering to pay for his lawyers? He is going to need money for it.
Here is part of what you may not have read:
<In New York, it is illegal for an unlicensed person to 3-D print an assault weapon, pistol or revolver.>
So now since you feel this is not a law, that it was made up, by all means contact this guy and let his lawyers know that the police who arrested him are wrong. Let me know how that goes. He should at least buy you a good dinner for pointing this out to him.

Wow-- maybe switch to decaf...
And you're correct in that I didn't see the part about NY being a restricted state. That said, yes, because someone made a law. Not liking them would certainly suggest becoming more active in the development and creation process as well as getting out the vote to support your side. There are motions currently to fight this in NY and in the rest of the country. Being snarky on a board of your fellows doesn't accomplish *our* goals.

Totally calm here, I "try", often it's an uphill battle, to keep people from making the kind of blanket statements you just did here :<I disagree-- meth is illegal, full stop. Printing a firearm is legal.>
Recall this? I assume when you said it you really did "believe it". The problem with saying that is others read it and may also "believe it". People "should" know better than to take what they read on the net with a heavy grain of salt but sadly many do not. So I am sorry you got butt hurt that I pointed out there had to be a reason he was arrested for making the gun. Not just "full stop, what he did was fine". I personally do not like this garbage the law makers are doing but telling anyone who will listen to ignore them is not helping anyone. As I said I find it hard to believe the guy lives in NY and did not know but it is possible he really did not. He may have listened to someone else tell him there was nothing wrong with making the gun. Well he certainly has found out different now, sadly. What's the old line about ignorance of the law is not an excuse? Telling the judge you read on the net that what you did was fine will maybe get a chuckle out of him as he ordered you to be taken to a cell. Got to stay up on what the law is if you want to mess with this stuff. I hate to see anyone get into legal trouble over stuff like this, but you have a LOT of lawmakers just laying in wait to make examples of people.

So in this case, is it the fact he was printing something that looked like a gun, or was it fully functional?

What if he freaking carved something out of wood...same thing now?
