Stuff happens - to good, mediocre and bad people.

I don't hold other people responsible for what happens to me if they did not cause it to happen. I don't accept responsibility for what happens to others that I did not cause, I do accept responsibility for those things I did cause, and I try hard not to cause problems for other people.

As I said, I take responsibility seriously. If something bad happens to me or mine, then I try to be prepared for it. Yes, something may happen beyond my capability to respond to it - things have happened - you can't prepare for everything, sometimes not even partially.

Stuff happens and you try to do your best.

Would I accept help? I sure would. Would I ask for help? To a point, yes. Would I demand help of an innocent bystander? No. But it seems that a lot of people today have a warped sense of responsibility; they do not accept responsibility for themselves and demand it of others.

To clarify, I do agree with you.

Im just saying that these choices are going to be tough.

Here is an interesting idea! I like it:) Me thinks a fat tire set up with one of those Honda Clone 150 cc four stroke motors might just be the best idea yet! Add a 3 gallon tank @90 miles per gallon, and you got a sure winner! I suspect the total weight of this would be in the 60 to 70 pound range!

I don't have family or pets around here, so getting home wouldn't be a giant concern (though I would still want too).

If the event occurred while I was at work, I'd likely head to rei or sportsman's and do some looting to make sure I'd be fine for a while. Mostly clothing that would keep me dry and warm on my trek home.

If I was at home, the first place I'd go is bimart for food, water, seeds, medicine, guns, ammo, and something I could setup for rain water collection. I'd have cash for this.

If I was far away from home, I guess I live here now. Time to gather supplies.

Isnt that idea the antithesis of prepping?

What do you need cash for if your plan is looting?

I prefer to pay for my things, but if I'm not home, I'd likely not have much cash on me and CC systems probably wouldn't work. Either way, I'm leaving with what I need.

Looting in a "Mad Max" world or "Gamma World" then okay dokey...
After a earthquake ... or just wanting to get home ... not soooo much.
Andy

I'm not a prepper. I'm simply a country boy that moved to the city. I have the skills. I just don't always have the supplies. Plus, I rent which limits my options.

There is no one solution.

Yes, but stealing ...?
Not going to work for me .

Maybe you should get prepped so you don't have to steal from others...
Looting and or stealing is a great way to get shot ... Getting shot ain't so great for survival.
Andy

Unless you are up this way when disaster strikes and you decide to steal / loot from me and mine...
So Again I must point out if you are not above stealing from your fellow man ... Stay away from me.
Andy

To be clear there are times where stealing would be okay ...
Getting medicine from a drug store to save a life.
Or the world is totally broke down and you were going to die otherwise.

But those are extremes ... Not I'm stuck after the big one and need to get home.
( like the OP suggested)

Stealing from someone can kill them ... and they might be willing to kill you to keep that from happening.
Neither is a great outcome for survival.

it is easy to prep.
You can do it a bit at a time and a well prepped bag can be a simple day pack filled with what you feel you need.
No need to rob others ... Just to get home!
Andy

There are plenty of things you can do to prep when living in an apt. The only reason any of us prep to stick around is to protect our home from looting, our homes are a huge investment.
You have no such attachment to an apt. Your goal as an apt dweller is to prep only enough to make it to the next fema evacutation, and wherever they take you just keep on going to another state to live as normal.

Looting will just get you killed, ironic since you would have just survived the worst earthquake in recorded history...
