"The publication obtained a draft of the National Defense Authorization Act written by Senate Armed Services Chair Jack Reed (D–R.I.) that would expand the Selective Service System—a national database that contains the names and information of potential draftees—to include women. Currently, only men are required by federal law to register for the Selective Service System, but Politico reports that Reed's proposed language would replace all references to men with "all Americans." "

I did, had to. Hated it at the time. But . . . . . I'm sure it's given me a different
perspective on our country than I would have not had had I not served.
And I'm telling you it's a warm feeling when someone offers to shake and
says "Thank you for your service". I remain proud of my Army time.

National Service...be it military , Ameri-Corps , Peace Corps , bring back the CCC...
Would be helpful for us as nation.
A short stint of 1 -2 years...with some benefits afterwards.
The longer you serve or the more hazardous duty you have...the more and greater benefits.

I can't imagine the guano monsoon that would accompany a draft. Also, drafting the people who now make up the pool would just place a lot of saboteurs and f-bomb-ups in the military.

I certainly do not advocate having a draft.

But registration and keeping it updated ( - and that needs to be automatically updated from filing tax returns or any federal benefit ) needs to be in place for all Americans. Citizens and Permanent Residents.
Exclude those we exclude from 2A rights, convicted felons, those under current domestic restraining orders, inmates in certain facilities, etc.

I know dealing with all those "feelings" is a challenge for the military, but they still need to register.

I like the idea of National Service, but that is separate from this registration.
Perhaps, if you complete a term of service, then you are removed, or put at the bottom of the registration rolls for the duration.
If Registration covers 18 thru 27 yr olds, and you did 3 years in AmeriCorps, you would be less eligible should a draft be brought back.
