The square hole in the handle is a Presto-Lite Key. It was used to turn the valve of the acetylene tank on an automobile to light the headlights. Most vehicles in that period used acetylene for powering the headlights.
I have one of these guys (the jar model) Hanging on the wall by my fridge. Its awesome as it catches the caps perfectly. Plus the guy is a former coastie and a solid dude (shamless plug for a friend)
