How does a shooting that happens off school property count as a "school shooting"?

Or are they lying to inflate the numbers?

They're probably interpreting the Gun-Free School Zone Act so that if anything happens within 1000 feet of a school, it's a school shooting.

Sadly they have been doing that forever. I remember one of the first interactive "school shooting" maps from like 10 years ago that included things like drug deals gone bad in school parking lots at 2am in July and domestic abuse when the husband came to school and shot his wife that worked in the office and than himself IIRC there were a couple suicides in school bathrooms with no danger to other students as well

The map data doesnt link to any sources though I dont doubt that something happened but when their very own data admits flaws it cant be trusted. Im guessing this one was an officer negligent discharge, regardless an accident is not a motive to shoot up a school.
Sadly, most people dont take the time to fact check this stuff just look at all the dots and accept what their told as the truth without challenging anything.

Its one of the reasons I'm a staunch supporter of gun rights. Years ago I was more open minded to "common sense" laws but when I fact checked a list of "mass" shootings directly from Everytowns website I stumbled on one that linked to the news article it was a gang hit that went bad. So I spent a few evenings and was shocked at how many didnt fit the criteria of targeting the public at large. When the datas corrupt, they are lying.

I think it was Everytowns map that I am remembering

It's intentionally stretching the definition to the breaking point to get the biggest numbers possible. The average person reads that and thinks it represents acts of violence taking place on school grounds against students/faculty, when in reality criminal activity, negligence, and even suicide by firearm within a "school zone" is counted. It's willfully disingenuous and one of the many reasons I treat everything anti-gun groups produce as suspect. They prey on people's fear and emotions to convince them to trade away their freedoms for a promise of security that their solutions have never and will never deliver.
