Even when it appears shooters are being responsible, it's a little unnerving when you pass half a dozen spots that are packed ... Driving further in, never know if the berms and trees will be enough 😁
I found one spot up there that had clearly been used for target practice, but it was essentially a hilltop when facing west or north, and there was NO berm or backstop in the direction that folks had been shooting--based on location of shotgun shells and bullet casings and the location of targets left there--other than lots of trees and perhaps distance to spots further down the road toward the highway. The odds aren't great that a round fired out there wouldn't hit some tree if fired through a couple hundred yards of woods, but still pretty unsafe to other recreational users. The fact that these shooters left all of their garbage and targets says they did not fall into the responsible shooter category.

With Wolfcreek closed, SB Rd was packed on Monday. The groups on each available site had multiple users. Especially since the far yellow gate (Rock Creek?) was closed. That meant at least two extra sites weren't open.

I was with two newer shooters. The husband was excited to use his new guns and suggested coming back next week. I hope to make it.

A forecast like this is not cheap! I paid the weatherman a sizeable amount for at least a little sunshine on Saturday. Well, he promises good stuff is on the way! (I let him know that I know people, so no funny business!)

Today's cleanup at Wolf Creek was freaking awesome!!!

There were 55+ plus volunteers! Everyone was really chill and had their minds set on get the damn job done! And boy did they!

They got all areas cleaned up. Yep, the shooting sites along Salmonberry Rd, North Fork Wolf Creek Rd and all 4 lanes at the Wolf Creek Shooting Lanes. They got rid of that ugly graffiti from the jersey barriers and boulders. They installed all new signs on the kiosk sign boards. They filled the 30 cu yrd dumpster to the top. They ate too much lunch (but we still had extra). They won a bunch of free raffle stuff. And all silent auction products were sold. Plus, Trash No Land raised our goal of over $500 to go toward the upcoming improvements at the lanes this summer.

And when it was all done, you should have seen the 'After Party'!

Hella thanks to all who participated! You people rock!

(Photos & video coming after I finish a few well deserved beers!)

We are all public land owners. We share all kinds of recreation on our land and we share the responsibility of caring for it. Forest management agencies do not have cleanup crews to pick up the trash you left behind. Each user is responsible for leaving their recreation site like no one has been there before. That's 'Paying It Forward' to the next person!

It's a simple and easy thing to do every time you visit your backyard playground. Just like the yard work you do at home, do a little yard work on our shared public lands.

But since there has been a lack of yard work on the Tillamook State Forest, a bunch of volunteers decided they would do it. So give them a High-Five and a big ol Thumbs Up for what they did last Saturday, March 21st!

Any words you could share about the road conditions once turning off from Highway 26? Is a lifted and/or 4x4 vehicle required?
It's been a minute since I've been up there but more or less been up there for 20yrs and never needed 4x4 unless it was snowy.

I've seen plenty of compact fwd cars up there at various shooting spots

I would not call Salmonberry a lifted or 4x4 required road under normal conditions. I have seen plenty of sedans and regular non off road vehicles up there.

The quarry area near the summit gets consistent traffic, but that section is yellow gated off now so the access stays clear for heavy quarry equipment and haul rigs, meaning 18 wheelers, loaders, dozers, rock trucks, and similar equipment. Between quarry use, logging planning, fire access, grading, brushing, drainage work, and general road upkeep, the road does see more attention than some random forgotten spur road.

That said, I would still treat it like public land access, not a maintained range driveway. Weather, snow, mud, fresh rock, road damage, gates, or active truck traffic can change the equation fast. Normal vehicle should be fine in decent conditions, but I would not push past a point where you are not comfortable turning around.
