Are these rifles chambered for 5.56 rounds?

That I don't know, I tried to contact Ruger today to ask but they are closed for the holiday and inventory until the 8th. I looked in the Q&A section and all I could find was that the mini-14 chambered in 223 could also fire 556 but nothing on the Ruger American.

The Ruger American Ranch is the only one chambered for 5.56/.223. Any other Ruger American .223 is only that; .223. Thats part of the reason they came out with the Ranch version. Same as the Mini-14. If you had a Ranch it was good for both, otherwise .223 only.

And @JCORD, that's a nice rifle. Would be nice to have another one but my pockets... empty.
