Perhaps the raccoon was just a good judge of character.

My folks once had a dog that was an excellent judge of people's character. He would lift his leg on anyone he deemed unworthy. Once he did this to one of their dear friends, and they were shocked and dismayed. Within a year, the man had violated their trust, confirming the judgement of "Little Dick."
