I'm still thinking a SBRd PS90 would be a perfect small lady defense weapon.

They come with the insert to use the Latest Ruger and another for Glock.

Oops. Brain fart on my part. I was thinking of the discontinued Police Carbine. I forgot about the new ones.

Very interesting. It would involve adding a new caliber to the supply line, but that is not the end of the world. The wacky 16" barrel is "meh", but a few pieces of paper, a couple C-notes, engraving, and away we go.

Out of curiosity do they make them already in shorty? If not, would shorty barrels be available or am I looking at having having to cut one down and thread?

If you lived closer we'd get this worked out.

:D

They aren't available that I know of as a factory SBR. You may find someone selling their SBR.

Easiest method to convert is a barrel kit. Swap the barrel for the shorter version.

Or cut and thread.

The old ones have been commanding premium prices for many years now. Almost as soon as Ruger stopped making them it seemed all kinds of people wanted one :) I suspect since the new one hit and production finally caught up with demand the old one probably are not as in demand as they were. Now they just need to bring out a couple more calibers!!!

I don't mind trading my 20+ year old Hi Point 995, all the remaining 995 specific gear, magazines, and some cash for an older PC-9 with the ability to use the same magazines as my P85, IF I can find one for under $600  Would simplify magazine supply so much more :p

That said, well. I probably would be more likely to build an AR pistol in .300blk or similar short barrel optimal cartridges... I'd LOVE to be able to have a Colt Commando style SBR with 10.5"-11.5" barrel, old style CAR15 stock, A1 upper.... Triangle FSB and carbine handguards. The only difference would be caliber, and probably more likely, a pistol brace/stubby pistol tube instead of the old style 3-position CAR15 stock.

I like my old PC-9. Have yet to try a new one.
And even though it's shorter overall than a 30 Carbine. It's much heavier.

I do have a WWII 30 carbine S.G. that needs a stock and sights [Front and rear]. The barrel is like new inside.
May be it's time to fix it up?

If you look around and are patient, you can sometime find a CMMG SBR kit, or at least the barrel.

Barrel, 10.4″ PS90 4140CMV CL 1:9, 5.7×28 | CMMG Inc.

Or you can send your barrel to TROS USA in Dundee:

I am looking to have someone do an integral suppressor on mine to keep the 16" length so I don't have to SBR it, and still have a suppressor. Currently, the ATF does not require notification/paperwork for crossing state lines with a suppressor, but they do for an SBR.

I really like shooting my PSA 22lr M-lok 16" AR15 upper on a poly lower. It's lightweight (aprox same weight as my ar15 pistol) Fired over 100 rounds so far with no problems. Just bought it a week ago on sale for $269. I know my wife will love shooting this. And if your wife has small hands she will like the smaller diameter handguard. Also hard to pass up 22lr mini mags for $75. for 1500 rounds shipped to my door.

$5 a hundred for the CCI MM is a real good price if its shipping included. Who is selling them for that?

So, we've been experimenting with various very diminutive automatic carbines for my better half. She is only 5'1" tall and has hands like a child. She can run a 10/22 like no nobody's business, but it is a .22, and many other carbines are too large, produce too much recoil, or both, for effective use. My SBRed AR-15 was darn close, but the recoil, and the muzzle-blast (sans silenced) was a tad much. The SBRed vz61 worked good, but it is a .32 ACP, so barely more downrange thump than a 10/22.

What we've tried in recent memory:

  • Auto-Ordnance M1 Carbine. Looked good. Fit her well. Just right weight wise. But a complete and utter dumpster fire when it came to reliability. Even after two trips back to the factory, many different magazines, spring and parts changes, and using every factory loaded ammo currently on the market, it still wouldn't cycle. To get through a single magazine was a miracle.
  • Marlin Camp-45. Just came in. This thread lines it out. Perhaps still viable, but looking for alternatives.
So, guess what? To heck with it, I'm thinking of building or buying an AR for this application. The parameters would be:

  • Not much bigger of a package than a 10/22 or M1 Carbine.
  • Same weight class as the aforementioned.
  • In a pistol-caliber. Thinking 9㎜ Parabellum.
  • Readily available magazines.
  • Threaded, preferably ½ x 28, for use with a silencer.
  • Title I would be easier, but we can roll with a NFA-registered SBR.
Recommendations? Thanks all!

I don't know if this one was mentioned already but reliability and $ wise the extar 9mm EP-9 is great. Around 4 pounds. Uses glock mags. I agree with reno911's first post though that these light weight "pistol/carbines" have more recoil than you might expect. Cost is $440 shipped on it.

Edit: I see see Joe Link mentioned it above. That's what I get for replying before reading all the earlier posts! :p

Also have you completely given up on the 22lr? It's cool if you have but just something to consider is that there are some really well built and sweet shooting walther-made clones out there for very little money. The hk 416 shown below is probably the funnest gun I have ever had. All metal except the crappy sights. 9 inch barrel. $350 at cddn right now. The colt m4 version or hk 416 rifle version have 16" barrels. All are threaded. I just got a bump stock for the colt m4 version just for fun but haven't tried it yet (I don't feel bad about running through lots of 22 ammo ha ha).

I just checked PSA and now they are cheaper, 1500 rounds $70. shipped.
Nice price! Those looking for CCI might keep an eye on retailmenot for Brownell's coupons. They have had some 10% off +free ship over $49 deals recently. CCI standard velocity came in at 4.5 c per round (just FYI, I know mini mags cost more). I've frankly been amazed at the low sound levels of the sub-sonic CCI standard velocity rounds out of a 16' barrel and now I'm pretty much totally shifting to subsonic rounds. Just so fun to shoot without that supersonic crack. Here are some sound levels of various CCI 22lr ammo if interested FYI: CCI .22 sound levels non-scientific test results

@CountryGent Two questions re the "too much" SBR: What length and what muzzle device? I've been told that 12.5" is the sweet-spot for "less than full length," and a better flash-suppressor like a Precision Armament AFAB or EFAB can help a lot, particularly with a shield like an Indian Creek BFD around it. (AFAB plus BFD is what I'd originally planned on my 16" AR for Home D, but since reassigned the parts to my 10.3" Briefcase Pistol build--which also uses the Vltor A5, so +1 on that.

Pistol braces are frequently lighter than stocks, too, so a 12.5" "superpistol" might help keep the weight down, especially if you KISS and don't go crazy with rail-mount gear, stick to either M4 handguards or a Magpul poly with an FSB tower. If you're going full SBR, take a look at the Survivor Systems Professional stock--looks pretty light and has a carrier for a spare mag too. PROFESSIONAL
