I took a Newport Hookers charter on Father's Day with my 5yo. It was booked as a salmon fishing trip, but it was a last minute trip, and I was looking for rock fish to keep things interesting for him. We failed at salmon, so they switched to rock fish. We both limited out at 5 each. Caught one ling that was barely too short.

Enough crab for dinner for four with enough left over to do it again tomorrow night.

I can't hardly move.

Boys, I outdid myself.

Brined for a day and a half, racked and dried for 4 hours, smoked with alder and a hint of cherry at 150 F for 2:15, cooling now prior to packaging.

Easily the best I've done.

All credit goes to Matt, this is his recipe. I added more fine ground pepper and a touch of garlic salt when I racked the pieces to dry prior to smoking. Still wet so the spices stuck. I like a bit of pepper. No honey glaze for me.

Nicely done, boys!

My brother joined me today for our inaugural salmon trip of the season. I try to fish for salmon on this day, July 9th. It was my dad's birthday and he loved to fish. He introduced me to what has become my passion. We lost him in January of 2020.

He would have gotten a kick out of salmon limits!

Sorry for your loss sir and what a great way to celebrate his life !!!!!

From yesterday around 11:00 am, for some reason it didn't post.

Ventured out solo this morning. Slept in a little, didn't leave the dock until the crack of 7:10.

Headed to the radio report hot bite and had my two hatchery coho in about 30 minutes. Back to the pots for 7 nice keepers to go with the 4 from yesterday.

Coho were modest size, pretty typical for early July. Added a limit of rockfish to the take. A guy could get used to this! 2D40716C-17B8-449C-8F94-6A6B2F3E613B.jpeg
