My BS detector has been ringing off the hook on this one. In reality, all they did was get rid of Obama administration duplicity and government growth program. The privacy laws already exist. Don't believe everything the chuckleheads are throwing out there.

"Today's action is another step to remove unnecessary rules and regulations that handicap economic growth and innovation, and moves
the country one step closer to ensuring that consumers' private
information is protected uniformly across the entire internet
ecosystem," countered Jonathan Spalter, CEO of USTelecom. "Consumers can
rest easy today knowing their privacy is protected under existing FCC
authority, which requires companies to keep consumers' data safe."
If the rules were to go into effect, they would classify certain consumer
data as "sensitive" — like browsing history, app usage and financial and
medical information — and require service providers to ask permission
before using it for advertising.
Customers would also be able to opt out of letting those companies use and share "non-sensitive" information.
FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, a Republican who opposed the rules as a minority
commissioner in October, applauded the vote in a statement, saying that
he will work to impose a technology-neutral privacy regime.

"Moving forward, I want the American people to know that the FCC will work with
the FTC to ensure that consumers' online privacy is protected though a
consistent and comprehensive framework," Pai said.

"In my view, the best way to achieve that result would be to return
jurisdiction over broadband providers' privacy practices to the FTC,
with its decades of experience and expertise in this area."
Democrats and activists waged a furious campaign against the bill, trying to peg Republicans as anti-privacy.

House passes bill undoing Obama internet privacy rule

where can I find the laws that already exist?

Apparently I need to spend hours fact checking both sides of the debate. Read the existing rules and see what they really are and compare them to the "already existing" privacy laws...

What to believe anymore?

My take is that there are two issues here: one is the commercial exploitation of our individual search information, which the Obama rule wanted to limit and which the House just said "exploit away"; the second is what the government could do, which hasn't been affected.

So good news, it's no worse with respect to government snooping than it ever was (they have access to everything); bad news, once again our elected representatives have sold us down the river in the name of continued "campaign" contributions.

If you truly cared about privacy, you would:
  1. Never have an account on the internert that you logged into from the same location more that 2x
  2. Not use credit cards
  3. Use only burner cell phones
  4. Make note of where all cametas are
  5. And on, and on....
Privacy is an illusion. Freedom is too.

This is just like pictures now. There are folks that are very good at photo shopping so who knows what is a real pic anymore?
Unless you have saved all the books you ever looked at to compare what is written or shown, they can basically rewrite history they way they want future kids to understand it.
Eventually all the things the future doesn't need to know will be washed away.

You guys seem to have a lot of trust in corporate consumerism marketing your personal data in your best interest.

This isnt about any govt conspiracy keeping track of you. Yes, everybody knows data is being collected about you in todays world, thats not a bjg deal. This is about what they are now doing with that data, the technology to aggregate that data has established a new money market for it worth millions do you honestly think those 3rd party entities care at all about how publishing your data affects you and your privacy?

But most here dont care cause... Captialism and all, yet get all passionate about govt registration of your guns. o_O

Doesnt make sense.

...Don't tell anything to anyone who you don't need to know your business.
...If you check "accept" to get something "free", it ain't really free, and you darn well know it. Live with it, or don't, you're a grownup!

Someone told us to all use PGP, back in teh 90s'. But I'll be only a few people here know what that is, and fewer how to use it and other than for specific tasks use it at all.
I have heard from security (electronic/information) folks that it is a red flag. If you use PGP, then you have drawn their interest.

Someone started a movement to fill your signature lines with all the NSA keywords. Over load their systems. Who did that?

We like our conveniences.

If you want to make it less easy to track you
- use a security mided search like DogPile Dogpile Web Search there are others. Do they really not keep logs? We know Google, Yahoo, etc all do.

Use a Private browsing mode, always.

Reboot, not just exit, or sleep, your computer.

Note - Win10 does NOT SHUTDOWN. YOU HAVE TO MAKE IT POWER DOWN MANUALLY. Default is SLEEP S4 - Hibernate. (hold shift key down when choosing Shut Down or Restart - if restart, you'll get some interesting options.

Use long passwords. "Mary had a little lamb, whose fleece was white as snow." is pretty good.
Gibson Research has been doing this for a while.

If you ask me what is my password for something I don't worry about, like my log in to NWFA, I don't know. I never knew. Cut/Paste.

You can't tell if you are being key logged. You all did turn off the 2 built in KeyLoggers in Windows 10, that we know about, didn't you? How about all those apps that you op't into?
Relax, Windows 10 doesn't have a malicious 'keylogger' | On MSFT

My life experiences from IT work to physical security, tell me that Security Measures are like Pain. You can put up with a little pain. But once it gets "more" you'll reach for something. I did have to move out of the way of a flying ceramic cup in a guys cube as I tried to explain the reasons he had to change his password every 90 days. He then pulled out his sharpie and wrote it on the monitor. Pain leads to changes.
Make the smokers go outside thru a secure door, expect they will go out the back door and prop it open. Seen that since the early 80's.

As to the OP.
If you don't think your ISP has been using your data, you are probably wrong.
Nothing is free. If you don't pay, then you are the commodity being traded. Google uses your behaviour to benefit.
Google offered a free 411 service - to get voice samples for their voice recognition.
Since you pay for an ISP, they may not have been collecting/selling your data. But the big guys most certainly were.

You mean like only buy a gun from a private sale you found on Armslist?
Or log onto NWFA every day to chat with fellow gun owners?
Or use google to search for the latest AR15 whatever?

Anyones "off the grid" attempts at privacy are meaningless in todays world without legal protections...

I do know there are things you can do to reduce your digital footprint, but there is only so much one can do and at some point you have to give your trust to someone...
After that the only thing left is legal protections.

Thanks for the tip about Win10 key logger though

I have no illusion of privacy, never did, and really don't care if my info is used....I don't mind having ads tailored to my interests. I don't do porn or say anything on line that I wouldn't say to your face or shout in public. I don't care if an employer sees ads on my computer because I wouldn't surf on his dime, he's paying me to work.
As for tailored ads...I wish my TV would only run tailored ads. I'm sick and tired of being subjected to mindless and unending Cialis, Tampax, and McDonald's commercials.

I'm old enough to remember when "THEY" monitored magazine and newspaper subscriptions, watched mailboxes, and sifted your trash, and lied to friendly judges to "tap" phones.
If I don't want something known I'll keep it to myself or face-to-face conversation with someone I know/trust or has more to loose than I do
... it was ever thus.
