Found this in a old house that my son was working on. I would like to clean it up and hang it in my shop, does anyone know how to clean it up with out wrecking it? It's a little rusty but I think it's still cool as heck;)

Something gentle like dawn soap.

Soft sponge. Beyond that you risk ruining the patina and render it worthless... like that kid who sold me a steel wool cleaned shotgun that he removed the rust with...

I think the two black lab puppies are cute as heck.

After I clean it up, should I put something over it to keep it from getting any more patina?

I have a few old Gas & Oil signs, their hung in my shop so I haven't coated them with anything, but if I did it'd be Fluid Film, then wipe off the excess.
