I still don't understand HOW they got captured in the first place. It's not like they were completely disarmed. They had medium and heavy weapons on those boats and ammo for them. As a Marine, it's unfathomable to me how they just let themselves be captured.

Maybe because we arent at war with the Iranians and opening fire on a larger force to make yourself dead for no gain would be stupid. They got caught where they shouldnt have been and later got released.

My understanding is the $400M was money( +interest) that the Iranians had seized by our banks after the Islamic revolution. Decades of proxy war with the Iranians wasnt getting us anywhere. Not the most popular thing to say on conservative gun forums but I welcome a more diplomatic relationship with the Iranians.

It looks like it was payment for military equipment we never delivered due to the overthrow of the Shaw. Jet fighters, apparently.

Uhhh, No, just don't EVEN go there.
We don't pay hard cash, in multiple currencies, for deals like that.
The notion that we would is preposterous.

Does anyone here realize how LARGE a shipment $400M in cash is? How much space it takes up? How much it weighs?
This was no small feat.
If a dollar bill weighs one gram, (as it supposedly does) and we paid that in $100 bills, 4 million grams, or 4 metric tons, that means we sent roughly 9,000 lbs worth of cash (8,800 lbs) to Iran.

No, .mil EQ payments would have been a wire transfer, NOT cash.

And that fighter deal was struck down with just under half delivered WITHOUT spares and maintenance. those that did get delivered are still sitting there with about 8 total flying hours! The rest of the arms and aircraft were diverted to other nations and the money for those shipments was never paid to the U.S. by Iran! So, us "owing" them is B.S. we don't owe them any thing!!!They never paid for the canceled shipments!

From Snopes:
The fact that the money was physically sent to Iran in various currencies rather than simply transferred by wire may seem odd in the context of the United States' increasingly cashless society, but that was done in order to avoid existing Treasury Department sanctions that banned the use of American currency in transactions with Iran, and international sanctions which at that time kept Iran from accessing the global financial markets (and which were lifted in January 2016).

From what I have read this was a poorly planned mission, poorly lead and they just went into Iranian waters. They were supposed to skirt Iranian waters. As for shooting back...USMC security guards didn't defend the US Embassy in Iran in 1979. Likely both units (the riverine sailors and embassy guards in 1979) were told not to engage. Total cock up but this is what happens when you purge the better officers and senior NCOs out of the military. Likely their ROE wouldn't allow defending themselves.

Yeah, it was a payoff.

Yes, and I would have said you took our embassy people hostage 1979. Consider it RENT for taking them. But BHO administration conveniently left that part out.

Dream on.
People, companies and countries that are owed a legit debt accept more conventional forms of payments.

Extortionists always demand cash. Always.

Can you imagine a kidnapper saying (s)he would accept a check?!?
ROTFLMAO.

It's not like this is the first time obama has negotiated with terrorists.
He doesn't get it. Never has/Never will.

How many modern Presidents have we had that didnt negotiate with terrorists? You can say "we don't negotiate with terrorists" all day long but its a bald faced lie. We've always negotiated with terrorists going back to Barbary Pirates. Ronald Reagan was the patron saint of terrorist negotiation.

Obama tried to say the payment wasn't being hidden or done without public knowledge.

Is this why is was delivered in an unmarked provate aircraft, delivered in cash stacked pallets in foreign currency?

I guess it's another operation by the same guys that did fast and furious.
Only they learned to take off the tracking info this time.
