When I was a kid of about 12, in California, I rode the 2 miles across town to sell my lever action .308 to our local gunsmith. If you brought a gun to school it was likely hunting season and the teacher would come check it out and show us theirs. We shot trap off the back of the football field. We had and outdoor education class that required you to bring your gun to school. Gun safety and hunters safety was a school program. The only restriction was I could not buy a gun until I was 18, but nobody blinked an eye if I had one. No one ever got shot, not even an accident, and my high school was armed to the teeth.
Today that same town is gang infested and regular shooting, including a step cousin who was killed for wearing blue. It wasn't the guns.
