Putting off and putting off..... Getting a couple bathroom remodeled. Should do something with the kitchen too. The kitchen had freshly refaced cabinets when we bought the house in 2001. Anyone in the potland metro area that have had this work done? Recommendations for, AND against, anyone? Have one name I got from a lady friend some years ago. "Laguna Construction" I'm just afraid of getting some butchers that charge a lot and do crap work that takes too long and cost more than it should.

No matter who you select make sure you have a written contract, progress payments and a hold back at the end. I recently had a lady friend pay a contractor 71k up front for a bunch of remodel work which turned into a absolute horror story. And make sure you check their license status, workmans comp and insurance.

"Progress Payments"? That's an accepted thing among these people? A norm? Sounds good. Hadn't thought about how that works till now. Not paying a full amount from the start sounds good. It's kind of weird to me as anything I ever did for people payment was at the end of the job.

Anyone good is over a year out.

That's sad to hear. I bet them Jacuzzi mugs could screw,,, I mean, get to me, right away!

Check 'em out with Oregon Construction Contractors Board. There are a lot of slimeys out there looking for a quick score. Are ya gonna be doing any tile work? If you are, PM me and I'll give you some pointers and recommendations. I was a GC but made the bulk of my money doing tile work.

I really doubt it. I believe these bathrooms are original 1977. A new toilet in the main bathroom when we bought. The house is just 1000 sq', 3-bed 2 bath. Two car garage on on a 50' x 120 lot. No rot under toilets. Shower pan is solid.

👆This. At a minimum, run their number on the OCCB site, google the company name and the owner, and check online court records. It is no guarantee as there are good companies that go bad quickly, so there may be no trace when checking. However, if there is a track record of scumbag-dom, it will almost certainly show up online in some form or fashion.

Also check for multiple business listings with the same owner. Some of these guys will go out of business under one name and start right up under another business name a few months or years later.
