When I was a kid of about 12, in California, I rode the 2 miles across town to sell my lever action .308 to our local gunsmith. If you brought a gun to school it was likely hunting season and the teacher would come check it out and show us theirs. We shot trap off the back of the football field. We had and outdoor education class that required you to bring your gun to school. Gun safety and hunters safety was a school program. The only restriction was I could not buy a gun until I was 18, but nobody blinked an eye if I had one. No one ever got shot, not even an accident, and my high school was armed to the teeth.

Today that same town is gang infested and regular shooting, including a step cousin who was killed for wearing blue. It wasn't the guns.

The late 50s and definitely the 60s totally ruined the core fabric of this country. So many misguided youngsters disavowed their moral values and of others, a healthy disrespect for parents and respect for the law enforcement went out the window.
To tell you the truth, I'm glad I don't have much time left to spend on this rock.
DAMN THAT ROCK N ROLL BUGGIE WOGGIE MUSIC…

Not so sure about that, it isn't the Boomers shooting up everything. Also, there was good reason to have disrespect for law enforcement during that time. We and today still.

I stated that that era totally ruined the moral fabric of this country, meaning after that it all went downhill with future generations.
I'm a boomer, but I'm a good boomer, not part of those POS boomers that didn't bathe, spit on soldiers, hated their parents and raised sniveling brats.

I miss the good old days ☹️

It's the long game by the Marxists and Communists, infecting our educational system.
Yes, and also the rise to power of women. Almost all of my friends' wives outearn them. Women do not have the same honor code as men, except maybe where children are concerned. A woman will say and do things that you would never say and do to another man, because he will kick your a*. Powerful women is a big cultural change in 2024 versus 1974 or even 1994. They don't need our support or protection anymore, and unlike most of us, they play for keeps.

Yes the rise of women but don't forget, the men that didn't put up much of a fight.

The OP is talking about the decline of our culture. It's not just one thing but the deterioration of the family is a big one. Women in the workplace, automaton, globalization and Marxist ideology as well. There are videos of Gloria Steinem talk about the CIA funding her for supporting feminism to advance US productivity.

I too grew up in California. I saw men throw hands when disrespected. I felt I lived in a free state and did a lot without asking permission. I hope the permission genie can be forced back into the bottle.

Yes unfortunately the good old days are gone for all of here on the west coast as far as legally buying guns from friends without a paperwork trail.
I was 14 years old in 1967 in California when I bought a 12 guage mossberg shotgun from the local hardware store with no wait period . As kids we would walk through town with our firearms on our way to our hunting grounds, In high-school we had our guns in our vehicles on school grounds in plain visible sight, some free states have not changed alot with there gun laws.
Oregon is on its way to being another Washington and California and this really CHAPS MY bubblegum!!! Totally Unconstitutional and Un-American.

Don't matter 'bout whatever generation....
All generations have issues and problems.

We have over 20,000 gun laws already in place....
If gun laws were the answer...then the problem would be done with.

I'm not disagreeing, but... I took a multi-state CC class, a while back and the instructor was a "been there, done that" dude. Knew his stuff. He had similar things to say about gun laws, except for one. Minimum 7 day waiting period, and I think only for people who do not already own a firearm. He claimed that amount of time allowed some of the hot-headed types to calm down and not take action. I have no idea how valid that opinion is. Does anybody have actual/reliable data on that?

I don't have any actual data However....

So what...?
As in ...
So someone wants to harm others....and now gee they have to wait 7 days....
Well....what is to stop them from using something else in the meantime to harm others / commit a crime....
Or...do the same after however many "cooling off days " / waiting period.

In any event...
You can what if / what about this all damn day...and still not have an answer.

And....why should I , who hasn't harmed anyone...be thought that I might do so....or be held accountable for someone else's actions...?
Speaking only for myself...
I am sick and damn tired of being thought of as threat or criminal . just 'cause I want to buy , own and enjoy firearms.

Uh oh... Andy is pissed!
Seriously though, I hear you. My argument against things like that is to present an example of something they could do that is even more destructive and readily available. Having said that, your position is more personal and authentic and I like that approach when having a conversation/debate with someone.

Um...no.
You would know if I was pissed.
My post which quoted...is not me being pissed....it was me . simply and directly answering a question.
Andy

Edit to add..
To answer your question of present an example....
Home made bomb...using a car or other vehicle...the possibilities are endless...
Which is why I said....

I was typing practically the same response as Andy but he got there first. I don't see any anger. Just an old and weak argument used to block a right to personal defense.

Play for keeps. Interestingly, among all the guys I have known, none holds a grudge more than a few years - they just move on but no longer associate.
I knew two women who ascribed to the aphorism, "revenge is a dish best served cold."
My ex has spent eighteen years as a vindictive, combative beotch. My adult children recognize the slanderous lies she told and still tries to spew. Two of them refuse to visit her.

Too many victims, I say mainly women, have been convinced a piece of paper and a 911 call (if he comes back) is actual protection. Look at the example of the man that killed his family and his Ex, allegedly because he was upset about the election.

A firearm is not a guarantee for safety but it is one of the best options and to be denied access because of someone else's beliefs is absolutely wrong.

I was not very clear. These are the exact arguments I was referring to having used in the past, which I think are great arguments, but adding the personal "frustration" makes an even better argument. I just kidding about being pissed but that was not clear either. Sounds like we are on the same page but my communication skills are lacking.
