I'm sure that guy across the canyon from you that you're glassing appreciates that your pack is a couple pounds lighter without the spotting scope.

You're assuming I meant while hunting and not on the bench. Got it. No im in western oregon. Not many places you can see far enough to use a spotting scope where I hunt. Binos are great.

Another vote for an older Leupold....or Burris ...Nikon...

Something in the 2x7 , 2x8 , or 3x9 range...
A good quality fixed power 4x or 6x is difficult to beat as well.

From what I have seen it is trendy to way over scope a rifle nowadays.

That's because it is. Another thing I've noticed is many of those using those higher magnification optics are looking through inferior Chinese glass. I can see better with my 6x Euro glass than I can with 16x China crap.

Exactly. But the 2-7x has been the "standard" for compact scopes on compact rifles and does a good job, too. Hell, the old guys thought 4x was a lot!

I've used good 3-9x40 scopes for a long time. Well worth the cost. The older I get, the worse my eyeballs get and the better glass has really helped. Thinking of stepping up the ladder again.

A friend needed a good scope for his 7 Mag, preferably silver. I found and bought a blued Remington with a silver scope. Swapped scopes and sold the Remington for a small profit. All good.

In reading your friend has a very basic very good quality rifle in a very good caliber, everyone owns or has owned an 06 in their lives. From a scope standpoint I own and shoot Leupold, Vortex mid to top grade, Zeis and on my long range target rifle I have a NightForce NSX all very good scopes. The last rifle I purchased was a Ruger #1 in 257 Weatherby Mag and I put a Leupold LRS on that rifle, classic rifle I wanted glass to match it. Your friend is going to use this as a hunting rifle and if this were me I would be looking at a mid to high mid level Vortex, lifetime warranty very good optics and the pricing is extremely competitive for a very good piece of glass! There are going to be some folks here that are going to hate this but a few years ago I replaced the Leupold on my 340 Weatherby to a Vortex, granted it was a high end Vortex but non the less, they make a fine scope for your friends application. If the base is a Werne I think you mentioned and the rings are the same, thats a good quality product and if the rings will fit your new scope I would have no hesitation in using those. Lapping the rings is not a necessary step in you friends application either. Good luck and take the time to learn about some of the new products in your search!
