The IR game camera is a good idea for getting the photo of the guy... but not necessarily "stopping" him.

You'll have his photo... But then what? It's not like the police are going to break out the facial recognition software to hunt down the guy kicking over your landscape lighting.

You might consider not on the IR cam, but also one of the el cheapo one that will flash in his face and let him know that his photo has just been taken. Along with a driveway alarm or something audible. The point being... make him know that his photo has taken, and the alarm serves as motivation to get moving before the home owner comes out.

I assume he might break the camera, but at least he'll know that you're not such an easy target anymore and hopefully he'll move on to other interests.

I like the idea of an irresistible lawn ornament as bait, triggered with the driveway alarm or motion alarm (sold at Lowes, and Home Depot for cheap) and an IR cam along with a Wal-Mart game cam (with a flash).
