Lots of good choices out there. The Browning Black Label Boot Dagger has a 4 inch 154 CM blade (excellent blade steel), made in the US but goes for around $140. Next up is the CKRT Synergist (made in China) with the reasonably good 8Cr13MoV blade steel and a 3 and 5/8 inch blade goes for around $70. AG Russel boot knives are also 8C413MoV steel blades 3.75 inches, also made in China and around $50. All of these can be found at AG Russel (agrussel.com). If you want to get more quality, there are undoubtedly a number of custom knife makers out there that would probably make one or have already made some they are selling. For my money I would go with the Browning. But that's me. I would stick with the better blade steels, of which there are plenty (VG10, S30V, 154 CM, ATS 34, all are stainless). They will hold a keener edge for longer. Stay away from blades from 440 A which is a pretty terrible steel, put on a lot of knives these days. If it says 440 it is probably 440A unless they specify 440B or 440C. Good luck with your search.

I guess it depends on what you define as good.

I have 2 of the plain stainless versions of this knife, 5.11 Tactical Sidekick Boot Knife They came free with boots I bought. They fit right in the knife pocket on the boot and come in quite handy.

I like 5.11 gear. Have 2 of their jackets, but the knife you mention is, in my opinion, too short to be of great defensive utility.

That is another one of those interestingly worded WA laws, RCW 9.41.250: Dangerous weapons ? Penalty.

(1) Every person who:

(a) Manufactures, sells, or disposes of or possesses any instrument or weapon of the kind usually known as slung shot, sand club, or metal knuckles, or spring blade knife;

(b) Furtively carries with intent to conceal any dagger, dirk, pistol, or other dangerous weapon; or

(c) Uses any contrivance or device for suppressing the noise of any firearm unless the suppressor is legally registered and possessed in accordance with federal law,

is guilty of a gross misdemeanor punishable under chapter 9A.20 RCW.

(2) "Spring blade knife" means any knife, including a prototype, model, or other sample, with a blade that is automatically released by a spring mechanism or other mechanical device, or any knife having a blade which opens, or falls, or is ejected into position by the force of gravity, or by an outward, downward, or centrifugal thrust or movement. A knife that contains a spring, detent, or other mechanism designed to create a bias toward closure of the blade and that requires physical exertion applied to the blade by hand, wrist, or arm to overcome the bias toward closure to assist in opening the knife is not a spring blade knife.

So the first issue is wording. The word "furtively" means, Furtive - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary "stealthily". So what the law actually reads is "every person who stealthily carries with the intent to conceal any dagger, dirk, pistol or other dangerous weapon". I am not sure how to non-stealthly concealed carry..........

The second part is that breaking the law is a gross misdemeanor, while it can carry quite a punishment, RCW 9A.20.021: Maximum sentences for crimes committed July 1, 1984, and after. this is generally one that is at the officers discretion. Generally to even get charged in a case like this you would have to be doing something else wrong. This is not to say you can not be charged specifically with it. Even if charged you would still be able to have your day in court.

another bunch of "feel good" laws that do little to nothing for safety/security of society at large. So you can carry a firearm but not a switchblade or concealed blade - can't even get a permit for it...
