looked at me like I was the problem for getting in the dudes sh*t.
You 'hit the nail on the head' - People are beginning to accept weird behavior (and appearances) as 'normal' now and conservative appearance and attitude is seen as somehow unacceptable. This is evidenced by the 'passive' attitudes witnessed by some when they see a low life panhandling someone and the person displays no reaction or defensive posture.

Yessir! Seeing a struggle is always exhilarating. Spent 5 years as LEO last century and found myself involved in a few scuffles handcuffing uncooperative players (who were often drunk/impaired and not feeling much of the pain input I was obliged to provide).

It never ceased to amaze me how many punches to the nuts some of these drunk/high/dusted dudes could take and still keep fighting. I have had to go hands on a couple times with disruptive people at the store, usually after they attempt to assault me (for catching them shop lifting), and I have developed several specific moves and procedures ( thank you to my Marine Corps sons) that usually ends the problem quickly, but not without some pain to the perps.

One of my investigator partners was a scary monster in the weight room, one of the bigger/stronger guys I've ever known. He usually got compliance verbally from smart people who didn't want their dicks knocked in the dirt.

In the office, if he wasn't picking a padlock (like some guys might fidget with a spinner or a Rubik's cube), he was always playing with a kubotan, constantly inviting people, "Come at me like you have a knife." Or "Try to choke me." He'd find a pressure point and escort a participant to the floor abruptly. A couple times I was ready to confess to being the second shooter on the grassy knoll or knowing where Jimmy Hoffa was buried.

Never saw it work on a drunk. Ever.

Some of the people in the burger joint and some standing there looked at me like I was the problem for getting in the dudes sh*t. They said, he might have special needs or issues. Yeah right, panhandling my wife was just the start of his issues. Had he not moved away when she told him to, and not moved away when I got up on him, he would have had major issues.
Yes that is exactly what I mean. Scum, and people protect them so they become quite bold and aggressive. The grocery store I use was starting to get over run with them to the point I almost was going to stop shopping there a while back. Store must have gotten an earful as they finally cracked down on them. Have a Sister in Law who's disabled. During the thick of it I was dropping her there one day, then went to park. I saw 2 of them home in on her. By the time I got back they were starting in on her until I did just what you did, stepped up and told them in not nice way to back off her. I did see a couple customers giving me the evil look as we walked into the store, too bad.
I get a kick out of telling the ones who are obviously able to work when they ask for money. There is a day labor joint across the street. Work that day get paid that day. They of course don't want to hear that. Hell I worked for that same place one time just after getting out of College again. Both kids worked for them a few times but these entitled scum are above that. They want others to just hand them money.

A while back my assistant and I had to go run some company errands. On the way back she pulled into a convenience store and wanted to get something. As I got out of her pickup I saw a guy setting on the bench outside the store, looking forlorn and smoking. As we walked to the door he said "hey have any change to spare?" To which I glared at him and said in a LOUD voice "Go get a job" - I think I freaked my assistant out as all she said was as we drove off was 'Wow!'
Bend as a whole is really getting bad with panhandlers, street corner sitters and the real idiots - the ones who sit on the curb of HWY 97 in town with their feet on the road!!

I had a homeless guy lean on my truck at work. I politely asked him to move along and he started getting defensive and started walking towards me. I told him to stop several times, when he hit about 50 feet I thumbed my shirt and started to prepare for the worst.

On the bright side he wasn't stupid got the point and turned and walked the other direction. That was the closest I have ever come to drawing my pistol.

Exactly, dammed if ya do & dammed if ya don't mind of deal, right?

Being ex LEO, I keep an eye out for the local LEO's if I see them at a traffic stop, if it looks serious I'll take up a position where I can observe, and if things do go south, I'll do my best to help them out, without getting shot by the officers.
I think most of the deputies know me by sight by now, as I talk to them when the opportunity arises.
Where was it recently when a civilian saved a cop from being killed by shooting the guy who had the cop on the ground? Anybody know? Saw it in the news I think.

I developed a hate for drunks, I had to deal with so many of them.
Haven't gotten over it either. Don't like getting S**t faced myself either.

Florida
Passerby shoots, kills motorist assaulting deputy after traffic stop

Wasn't there something similar in Clackamas within the last couple years?

I had an employee text me today that some naked guy was going crazy in his store, they had 8 cops there around him and he was screaming. He tried to make a break for it and they tackled him, cuffed him, and sedated him.
I told him I wanted photos or it didn't happen. No such luck, but maybe I can get LP to get me some video
