A jury found an off-duty armed security guard guilty in the fatal 2024 shooting of a 17-year-old boy outside a sporting goods store in Renton.
Myers is scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday, July 21. He faces a sentencing range of approximately 10 to 18 years in prison, including a firearm enhancement.

ETA: I have seen a few reports that suggest the actual time with "firearm enhancement" is in the 20 to 28 year range, but unsure if that is correct

I'm sure there will be no controversy on here over that

Airsoft guns look exactly like their full-sized bigger brothers. Maybe they should go back to orange muzzle devices to protect our children

This guy tho was off base in so many different ways That he has now screwed up the rest of his life. His son now will not have a Dad around for a long time. 6 of 7 shots were to the kid's back? Really? Tough all the way around

He murdered the kid AFTER he had dropped the airsoft pistol and raised his hands Muzzle color be damned, that was not the problem here

No need to force the clear toy guns on us. If you live in the hood you always have to be careful. In that case, the orange tipped clear guns aren't a bad idea... for the rest of us... No Thanks.

Maybe kids should be careful in public places.
Very true but if you are NOT LE then DON'T make assumptions, choices and decisions you are NOT qualified to make.

This idiot did so PURELY only on what he THOUGHT was correct, but the reality was he was playing out some 'game' he had in his mind and ultimately precipitated it to HIS 'undoing' - and the death of an innocent person.

He chose to insert himself into something. Its real easy to see he went around with a fantasy of being able to do this. Now he will have a long time to live with that really stupid choice.

Lots to agree with there in your comment, but I'd have to draw the line at conjecture and mind reading.

Let me ask, have you ever mentally rehearsed what your actions would be if this or that situation ever plays out in front of you? No? Then please consider that some folks would declare you behind the power curve and ill-prepared to deal with any situation that might require you to un-holster.

Yes, you've done some rehearsing? Good. Now ask yourself whether some judgemental person - not a mind reader - might declare such a rehearsal to be a fantasy that you probably always hope for an opportunity to fulfill.
Only when tweakers are involved😉

I wonder if the guy saw some middle eastern looking young men and figured terrorist attack? Not that it would excuse anything. That is why I would not intervene personally until I 100% knew what was going on, and I would have to not have my mom or wife with me.

What I would do If I saw something suspicious is to call 911. And remain under, or find cover. That way if the kids with air soft guns get shot, I am not the one going to prison for it. If they turn out to really be committing an armed robbery, then they deserve to get shot and the police can be the ones to do it.

IF this is what 'the guy' saw' (or interpreted) BASED ON WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED then he was beyond the realm of reality.

I see people OPEN CARRYING daily where I live. Should I go into a 'soaking sweat' every time I see someone doing so and go into a crazed, maniacally interpreted belief they are planning a 'terrorist attack' - or something else?

Well, it didn't work out too well for this idiot AND the boy he killed.

These Idiotic, paranoid 'gun owners' who do stupid stuff are one of the BIGGEST problems we have as responsible gun owners and are NOT doing us - or laws and attitudes any favors.

Lock him up and throw away the key. 51 year old didn't have a single critical thinking brain cell in his head. So he shouldn't have a free life either.

Freedoms come with inherent risks but there are some really dumb people out there who carry guns in public.

Murders a youth over dubious reasons, then arrested, tried, convicted, and soon to be in PMITA prison for an extended stay. Not to mention a prohibited person forever, likely was bankrupted during the ride, and won't be a part of his children's and family life. He'll spend the rest of his days wondering how different things could've been if he'd just called the authorities and then walked away. I feel sorry for his family, but that goes even more so for the one that lost their child in a totally unnecessary incident. Zero fornications given for this idiot; he can rot in the joint where he belongs. If nothing else, he's a cautionary tale of how not to be a citizen who carries.

This is why I mind my own dang business. No way I'm getting involved with stopping an "armed robbery". I'm not a cop, I have no duty to help. And I certainly don't give a damn about the corporation's money getting stolen.

Yeah, he should have just minded his own beeswax or called 911 if he really believed something was going down. It's not like they were wearing vests with sticks of Dinamite on them. Oh, those were actually road flares? Well maybe he might have got a pass.

The first thing I am doing during something like that is securing my family. I would be on the phone with 911 as I drove away from there.
