I just love the A-10 Warthog and it's awesome 50 cal nose gun. Those big engines make them look like something out of Star Wars. So here is some eye candy of the plane and it's gun.

If it wasn't so effective and popular among the troops the pentagon wouldn't want to get rid of it!!!!!!! Very simply it's unacceptable because it doesn't look quite domesticated!

One of the relly cool things about ROTC in the 70s was the military still had some money. I went on several field trips where they flew us to various AFB in the US. I think in 1977 we went from Pullman to Davis Monthan in AZ. They had the first several A-10 prototypes they were testing. The GAU 30mm was not installed but they were using 20mm gatlings to get close to weight and balance and testing accuracy, etc. very cool trip. They handed around a small block of face hardened tank armor plate they had fired the depleted uranium round through... It looked like you couldn't have made a cleaner hole with a drill.
A-10 Thunderbolt II is an amazing weapon system.

I haven't seen the 30mm API rounds damage up close and personal, but I have seen what a 120 mm DU penetrator does to an armored vehicle. To start with, the exit hole is massive because of spalling of the target metal. And then, everything that is carbon based inside the vehicle is essentially incinerated by the molten metal and gasses. Scary and impressive at the same time.

Here is what depleted uranium bullets can do ant entire building. You can bet that all of the bullets went clear through the building in the ground.

FWIW, the 30mm rounds for the GAU-8 don't contain loose powder. Instead, the powder is in a bag. That is why the gun is designated a cannon.

There are generally 3 types of ammunition associated with the GAU-8. These would be the API (armor piercing incendiary, or deleted uranium) rounds, HEI (high explosive incendiary), and practice rounds or test ammunition. As a general rule, the API rounds have a magenta tip or band, the HEI have the same in yellow, and the practice rounds are usually blue.

There was a time when dummy rounds were relatively easy to get. I remember entering drawings for them at air shows. They might even give you one if you were interested. They are much harder to find now.
