Radiation Therapy starts Oct 9th. 5 days a week for 6 weeks. Chemotherapy add with radiation was an option but I declined. The reason is as this is a very rare and aggressive cancer the few studies showed no difference in the 3 to 5 year outcomes (those treated with chemo and radiation vs radiation only therapies). The Medical Oncologist left it up to me as he would have added the chemo but also agreed with me in declining this right now.
This cancer tends to metastasize to the lungs about 80% of cases studied and the Radial Oncologist had me get a CT scan of my chest and I was clear so that was very good news. If at some point this cancer shows up in my lungs or another area I will add the chemotherapy as well as additional radiation at that time. I'm hoping that this cancer is still in the head and neck area and maybe the radiation will kill those cells. We will see.
