does this remove the tax to build one yourself?

I don't think so.

Edit, if talking about building your own firearms "silencer"/suppressor, I dont see language relating to "making". Only "transfers". Seems they kept the $5 transfer tax for AOWs, and $200 transfer tax for everything else. Likely, also means $200 "making" tax still applies, particularly in the case of AOWs.

There are a few dissenting voices, but when it comes to votes, the GOP follows Trump's lead (for now).
Tell it to Ed Martin, Trump's nominee for DC US Attorney General. ;)

Sad. Per the photo in @CamoDeafie's post #23, it looks like the suppressor bill reduces the cost to $0 or near $0 to register it with the NFA, right? If so, that would be a YUGE win. Probably still have to apply and get approved, but would save us $200 each.

We know this, because it has happened before; the House passed a second AWB bill, but it died in Senate Committee and thus never became law.
I believe you are referring to the AWB bill passed when Democrats controlled the house, correct?

I could not find anything about the above bills being voted on, but when looking I did discover that TOMORROW, the 13th of May, it appears they are doing something with a bill that allows Federal Law Enforcement Officers to purchase retired weapons for salvage value: FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER SERVICEWEAPON PURCHASE ACT OF 2025. It's HR 2255 and H. Report 119-80.

The report - per the vote counts it appears Democrats tried to gut it and failed:

It reduces the cost to transfer, not make. But GOA wants it to reduce tax to $0 for all NFA Items or repeal whole NFA.

Don't know if it means buying suppressors would cost nothing tax but still require approval fees or not. If this bill pass, expect someone to sneak in "administrative fees" of $200 or more

Yes.

I wouldn't be ecstatic about that if that's how it went but it would be a step in the right direction if they didn't use it as excuse to jack up administrative fees and it had a reasonable max time limit to get approval.

It's also contingent on the bill passing. I honestly don't know if it'll pass as is, or if it gets gutted and stuffed with other things and firearms stuff removed

Edit. I'm not sure if it needs to go through Senate as well in order to get to President desk ?

Edit 2. Yup. It needs to go through Senate in order to get to President desk to be signed into law. Expect Senate to amend and change things

There's another question this raises, if a 200$ (or 20%) stamp was applied as an excise tax without any registration requirements would people support that?

There are several benefits:

1) No registration. At least at the federal level. There are a lot of people who simply do no want to be on a "list" - plus the plausible deniability of being able sell/etc. the suppressor without having to account for it with the feds (and probably state/etc. gov).

This is an issue for me - especially as I get older and I want my kids to have/keep suppressors.

2) Possibly (probably?) no further $200 transfer fees when a person goes to sell a suppressor they own.

OTOH - $200 is excessive for an excise tax - it is punitive. Would you support a $200 excise tax on guns?

$200 is something today, but much less than it was back in 1935, the equivalent of about $6000 in today's dollar. Not that the Government should be in the business of taxing a 2A right

We already have a Federal excise tax on guns and ammunition of 10-11% paid by manufacturers, producers and importers. Some States also impose a tax on civilians buying firearms and ammunition (California....)

But fully agree with you that govt has no business levying taxes on Rights, or converting a Right to privilege by way of licenses and fees. That alone should have rendered NFA unconstitutional on its face, using Murdock V Penn.

Agree that CA has gone Bat S. crazy in its pursuit of every penny they can find to fund their "Sanctuary State" status. Good Party of Donkey's leadership for you.
