I can't help but wonder how much something as simple as ammo would be in these barter times? Notice the last panic? How a huge percentage of the shooing public was soon all but out of ammo? If people who shoot regularly were that bad off there had to be a lot of others too. seems like ammo would make a great barter tool for lots of little stuff needed. Not to mention the ability to protect what you have from the grasshoppers who just want to steal what the ant's stored.
I would never trade my ammo conversation over .....

IMHO, spend your money on items you can actually use and/or eat/drink. You will not be able to eat, shoot, or drink precious metals. Personally, if bad happens, I want to be self sufficient for as long as possible. I do not want to have to venture out or make contact with anyone. Barter? With who? People you don't know? People you do know? Things can get ugly even with people you know.

Cash is for the immediate problems, when businesses/people will still be accepting cash and "ugly" hasn't quite caught on. Get in, get out with your items. The first 24 hours you'll probably still be ok (depending on where you are), after that ....... stay home, stay quiet, stay alert.

Anyhow, people can stock up on precious metals. Me? Not so much.
Not necessarily you have to buy and save some silver to make silver bullet 's in case the Where Wolf's come

Water and food
Guns and ammo
Useful goods
Fuel of all sorts
Some cash, maybe even lots

Then useless but valuable trade commodities

This order ' s best in my view. I would never get started collecting precious metals until you have "enough" of everything else. Things would have to go really far down the road before gold/silver is better than cash, rice, and ammo.

I think silver is a better deal. It will be much easier to barter with due to it being lower in value.

Silver is heavy. I have some stored but would be worth less than ammo. Buying reloading gear and trading ammo might be better when everything goes to poop. First aid materials to.

I stock everything from seeds to epipens.

I agree I have some silver I didn't go crazy buying lots of it lol little here and there if the S#!+ really gets bad it will be worthless any way cash will be useless from the get go nobody will want CASH if they are not sure about the future especially the cash from the U.S. with all the Socialist talk going on around here LOL

That's been my thinking all my life. If things are "falling apart" who the hell wants paper money? For that part who would really want precious metals either. I guess if it was just some kind of short term thing and everyone was sure it was soon over, great cash or gold silver. Those wanting it would have to feel it would soon be worth it as stuff returning to "normal". In either case I always figure ammo and the components to make more of it will always be worth trade goods for anything I need. If nothing else for protecting the ones who were smart enough to store up stuff but not smart enough to protect it. :) Told Wife this lead up to Y2K. She was saying we did not have enough. Said some were storing up huge sums of food. I told her relax. Those who stored up all that food would feed us to help them protect it all.

You are forgetting the purpose of money. Bartering is great, but what if my trade is worth x, and what you have is worth x*2, how to make up the difference? Or I want what you have, joe blow wants what I have and you want what joe has, money (precious metals) can be the intermediat. That and as a store of value has been the purpose of money for all of human history, and tho many things have served as money throughout the ages, gold and silver have been the most useful for thousands of years.
Sure, those thing you feel you will need will cost you much less now than when things fall apart, but you should have some of the universal "money" also. Remember the US Constitution says only gold and silver are to be money!

Those that store food also store guns and ammo. The three "B"s are Beans, Bullets, and Bandages. On the preparedness forums people tend spend more time on firearms and defense than any other single topic. Not just the guns, but about things like plate, barriers, kill zones, strategies, etc. There are few people who would allow someone they don't fully trust to join them. Be aware that there is is a class of people who are up front that they don't prep because their plan is to rob those who do.

You might want to re-think your plan a bit and make sure you have things to bring to the table like medical, agricultural, construction, etc., skills in addition to protection. They didn't plan of feeding you so you need to be VERY useful and they need to know and TRUST you NOW if you want their cooperation THEN.

Well first you snipped the part where I was talking about the lead up to Y2K. Kind of long past. When that was going on a LOT of the people I saw stocking up owned no guns. I never believed in the tinfoil hat stuff about it in the first place. I did have to laugh at people who were stocking up thinking the sky was falling yet had no plans to protect themselves. I guess they thought 911 would work still?

As I have also mentioned we keep a supply here at all times for the possibility of a good shake. Could disrupt life for a week or two. As long as the house does not fall down we are fine. As for the "real" TEOTWAWKI stuff to me this is still tin foil hat. If that ever happens the best you can hope for is Military running things. Those who prep and "think" they are going to take on the Military are watching too much TV. If even the Government fails then none of us are going to be able to do much. Control will be by warlords. Unless you live on a farm that's self sustaining you're screwed. If you do have such a farm the warlords are soon going to show up to relieve you of it. Many take these fantasies to some laughable extremes.

The gold and silver guys have yet to win that battle in court. A lot of them end up in prison or dead when they push it far enough. Don't get me wrong I still think this is by far the best place to live but, laws, all laws, including the Constitution mean what someone in a black robe says it means. It's bad enough now. If civility breaks down that constitution well mean nothing. Best we can hope is this never happens. Short term stuff like disaster is easy to prep for. All out break down? If that happens you have to join the toughest gang.

Anybody who thinks they can take on the military force of the weakest country on earth is delusional. Those folks are either on a reality TV show or at the fringes of a preparedness forum. The goal is to survive long enough for rule of law to resume. The time in between can be very dicey, and that is what most of the people are preparing for. If it's a total collapse then you likely won't make it the first few months anyway.

A self sustaining farm would be very difficult to hold if there was a total collapse. The only thing sustainable is a community big enough to protect itself but small enough to provide for its needs. That's why I'm headed to part rural where people are as self sufficient as is practical.

If you are looking for a place where we can break down look at what is happening in Venezuela and what already happened in Argentina. The same things that led to socioeconomic collapses there are at work right here. Nobody wants it to happen, but it can and will if we don't keep things in check.

Natural disaster will happen. These are speed bumps that are memories in ten or so years. Rule of law is usually only a few days away. I'd still want to be prepared for at least a month for my family.

Yep, places like the socialist paradise there fall into the mess they are now, the former Military takes over. After all they have the real firepower. Everyone else has to try to join the best bunch. NOTHING wrong with prepping for disaster though and foolish to not. Many people who were alive during things like the great LA riots or Katrina still do nothing. I have to guess they either just think it "can't happen here" or they really think the stores will just magically still be open. Will not be pretty if we have a real good shake out here which they keep telling us may well happen.
