dumb question, converting a m&p 15-22 to 5.56 .......

so i am new to the firearm hobby, see people talk about taking the ar 5.56 and changing the upper to a 22lr for cheap shooting fun. so if i buy a s&w M&P 15-22 can i change the upper to a m&p ar 5.56? or does it only work starting with the 5.56 and changing to the 22 upper afterwards?

M&P 15-22 upper and lower are 22cal only.

If you want an interchangeable AR 5.56 to 22cal you need a 'regular' AR lower and two uppers, one 5.56 and one 22cal, like a Spike's T-22. Of course, other uppers can be used like 5.7, etc.

I like to use a .22 conversion kit in my AR. They may or may not shoot as straight but they are cheaper and take up less room than another upper does.
