Quick Questions related to the storage of crossbows. Is it preferable to remove the string for extended storage duration or is there no harm in storing one while its strung?

I thought it would be acceptable seeing how they come strung in the box (Atleast mine did). Any input from someone with good practices?

compound yes leave it strung, recurve no.
I built my own press to change out the strings on my compound crossbow most shops aren't set up for working on crossbows.

Crossbows- Ive wanted one for my entire adult life- but there's always SOMEthing that has caught my eye that seems more important at the time! As a teen, there was a guy who made one using some surplus Mauser parts (surps were cheap in those long ago days)- and a small car leaf spring. Cocking it was a chore! as there was no crank to draw the thin cable he used for the "string". They do tear up strings pretty fast...
Anyone have/had any experience with the "pistol" crossbows? Curious as to their usefulness beyond having fun...
