Can You SBR a AR Pistol?

Well, can you? I know you can't turn a regular shotgun into a AOW, but am wondering about buying an AR pistol, making sure it all works great, then just adding a stock on it, since that shouldn't mess anything up. I hear of a lot of people who register a lower and have problems with it or an upper they build. I think if I could buy a factory pistol, that would be ideal. And I'd have something to shoot in the mean time.
