There have been a handfull of Sheriffs that have done this.
Usually due to budget cuts and no jail space.
They know they have no money tonpay for enough officers to keep their streets safe and know even if they make arrests people just walk free until they commit a more heinous crime.

They have a conscience, the politicians don't

We're slowly goin' back to the "old school" days where everyone takes personal responsibility for their own safety. The cold naked truth is slowly coming to light that "government" never could, never did, and NEVER will keep you "safe".

Most folks would be shocked if they realized it's ALREADY established case law that government is not responsible for YOUR safety.

The case that usually gets credited with first establishing this was Warren vs. DC...back in 1981, I believe. But there were certainly others like Castle Rock v. Gonzales. More recently, there was this incident on a New York subway where a MMA dude took on a killer with a knife while two NY police officers sat behind the locked door of the conductors car and watched. Now fortunately most cops aren't like these two in NY, but there are never any guarantees...or legal obligation for police to intervene.
