They are "destructive devices" so $200? Not sure.

The primary cost is the piece itself. I would bet the ammo for some of those costs more than the tax stamp. IIRC, if you get ammo with explosive over a quarter ounce in the projectile, then each round is itself a "destructive device" and you have to have a tax stamp for each round. I would expect most of the ammo, if not all, that they shoot, is practice ammo - probably reloaded by the owner themselves with practice projectile they buy surplus.

I went to a private shoot about 20 years ago where there were mortars and cannons, most were muzzle loading or some variation, but they were either homemade or modified surplus to not be breech loading (with exceptions) do they did not need a tax stamp. That and the .50 BMGs were fun.
