ATF trolling classified adds

ATF sting is one explanation. For out of state, regular people trying to take advantage of you is another. A state agency sting such as WA state is another. An anti-gun outfit doing "research" is another. There are probably more.

To me reg person trying to take advantage seems most likely, followed by ATF, and only tiny tiny chance of the other 2 I would guess.

I don't know about that, I believe Turd Ferguson would go to any length to create another law (whether based on legit or false circumstances) to disarm every law-abiding citizen.

Like anything it is possible SOME of the members of alphabet agencies are more 'over zealous' than others, maybe no family life, hobbies or other interests and all they have is their 'job' - and spend their off duty time doing stuff like this.

I once knew a member of the Deschutes Co. Sheriffs dept. who in the summer (off duty) would go to Wickiup Reservoir at night, prowl around in the woods where people were camping near the water looking for 'anything' he could that might be illegal - and if he did he broke up the 'party' and called on duty LEOs to respond.

It might be some other entity seeking headlines, like the Oregon gov. or a city gov. or just some anti-gun entity, looking for somebody to make an example of. I wish we were back in the good old days, but I never knowingly ask someone to break the law and if they ask me to, then I decline.

Could even be some sort of journo looking to do a "look how easy it is to a buy a gun!" story.

Yes it is. Some of the rules are really strange and unnecessary, and mods & mgt don't seem to understand common internet concepts, such as memes. Memes are NOT allowed, but sometimes someone will post a pic with no captions and a mod will delete it calling it a meme.

New member 'welcome' Introductory post pictures are not allowed.

If a video is posted that has ANYTHING 'impure', or ANY swear words it is deleted and the member is warned or temporarily banned.

I am NOT passing judgement but this forum has a very active 'religious' membership and has a 'religious discussion' thread category.

I can't be the only one dying to know which forum this is!

Now while I do say some stuff on here that is a little off the cuff, I try to not make incriminating statements. I'm pretty hard on certain groups especially the ones that "identify" in weird ways and I've definitely had my fair share of hand-slappings from mods on this forum for speaking certain truths that are offensive to certain (weak minded) individuals BUT everything I've said on this forum I would gladly be able to defend it to a judge.

My advice is don't say anything on this forum (or anywhere on the internet) that could incriminate you because one day it might be used against you in a court of law.

We also get lefty trolls, and people who try to get others to do shady stuff. I've personally reported several people openly advocating breaking some law or another. The staff is very good at dealing quickly with the more blatant offenders.

Going a step further, it's also never a bad idea to protect/insulate your personal info/identity as much as possible. You can be as careful as you want with what you post, but many don't stop to consider that what you say, admit to and share "today" may be fully legal activity, but that's in no way a guarantee it won't be illegal "tomorrow" and be used against you.

Call it paranoia, but experience shows that what may be considered an outrageous prospect today often turn into reality... if you live long enough.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. "If they wanna know, they'll know". That doesn't mean standing up waving your arms around is a smart idea.

Indeed. There can be varying factors involved in a wide variety of situations. My post wasn't intended as a deep dive into any "given" situation. Merely a single surface example that could possibly appear as a "shady hand-off" to someone not as well versed to know that something like that is actually quite a common practice.

Obviously, I don't know what the OP's knowledge level is when it comes to firearm or related deals. I just know that some folks idea of what is "shady" or not can sometimes be inaccurate.


Anecdote:
I was once trying to buy a shotgun barrel from an out of state guy. He was under the impression it could only be shipped to an FFL in my state via overnight shipping with signature required and wanted me to pay the exorbitant and unnecessary costs. I informed him that an FFL wasn't required and asked him to give me a standard shipping quote directly to a residential address. He immediately cancelled the deal and blocked comms stating he won't deal with anyone asking him to engage in illegal activity. That was the end of that!

(I even got reported to the admin's.(not NWFA))

Funny thing is. It was a fairly rare SxS barrel in excellent condition and his asking was one of those "on the verge of stealing it" varieties. If he had written back and insisted that was the only way he would ship it... I woulda paid the extra and been happy to pick it up from the LGS.

Another forum I am a member of (very 'old' forum - probably one of the first) has a real problem with trolls, however a lot of them appear to be 'bots' but a lot of the membership is pretty naive and 'roll over' for them.

The biggest % is a new member posts wanting to 'know the value of this gun' they got from relative/family member etc. They post blurry pics of the gun, showing no markings and describing them like they know NOTHING about guns. Some of the guns they posts pics of are illegal such as chopped rifles and shotguns.

There are so many of these similarly verbatim they cannot be legit - and it's crickets thereafter from the 'new member'.

Then there is the new female 'member' who joins. Avatar is a pic of an attractive girl but the verbiage, grammar and punctuation is typically poor and is no doubt something AI or a BOT.

You're totally right. I'm careful to not make statements that can incriminate me but man.... some of the things I've said on here can probably do some damage to me if oregon and washington continue to go in the direction they are currently....

One thing that suprizes me is I get the ATF news feed every Friday. (I'm not special anyone can get it.) It sure seems like the districts other than the west coast are way more busy get arrests and convictions for gun crimes. One has to wonder what going on with the west coast?

Maybe because 80% of the U.S. population lives in the Eastern half of the US(?) If that plays, then it would actually be surprising that there wasn't more of a disparity per capita(?)

IE., 4 times the number of prosecutions than the West, but only 5% of crimes are prosecuted in the East vs. 40% of crimes in the West(?)

(Other than the 80% stat, the rest are not known statistic.. just hypothesizing about potential disparity based on population densities)

I hadn't thought of the population disparity so good point there. What I noticed was the gang/drug/guns/violent crimes getting convictions but not so much on the west coast.

Anything is possible but I have extreme doubt any agency has time. Every now and then I read of them going after some idiot who was selling guns illegally. Unless I have missed something every one I have ever seen they mention they were stringing the seller along for an ungodly long time for multiple sales before they jumped them. I think too many have the idea that agencies are "watching then" when they are not nearly as important as they want to believe. I any case will not effect me as I am not selling this way so don't really care. Find it quite funny at times though how many think they are so important that people are after them

Trolling the classifieds seems like a lot of work.

In any event...
We have a report system here at NWFA.
If you suspect illegal activity or actions regarding a classified ad...simply report it.
No need to make a thread about it.
