Kind of spendy ($500 or so at Midway) but this Leupold looks very interesting: <broken link removed> I like the idea of an illuminated optic that turns itself on and off based on motion.

ETA: if money is no object and you want to support a local Oregon/northwest business then this scope might be for you: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/47...t-focal-plane-illuminated-h-27d-reticle-matte

or

What I can't wrap my mind around is the only difference that I can see between scopes is the reticle and yet that dfference is worth $599. Wow!

Most people posting are talking about ACOGS, but it's obvious most don't understand fully their capabilities (myself included). I just had a bit of an epiphany....I just scored a top of the line TA31RCO Acog, NIB from a kid that was a Stryker Commander @ JBLM...for $500 (best online price is $1350 or so.) The point in mentioning (gloating over) my deal is that, had I forked out for a new one, I never would have gone for this model just because of the dollars alone. ...It's equipped w/ this BAC (Bindon Aiming Concept)....works like this for me: I am right eye dominant. If I sight through ACOG w/ my left eye, leaving both eyes open, the optic essentially superimposes the reticle in my dominant eye field of view. It's most freaky! Obviously in a tactical situation, this leaves your strong eye for scanning for targets while also maintaining a huge field of view. It definitely takes getting used to/training etc. However, it has obvious possible applications for someone in just your position. You should explore this and/or get a demo from someone actually knowledgeable in this concept/feature. Other (and cheaper ACOGs are equipped with this.) I've only had it a few days but plan to study this so I can understand it and take full advantage.
cheers

I plan to check as the final step. However as a former Fed employee, I had all the kids info before we even met; personal i.d. unit number etc. and let him know that....would have been pretty ballsy for him to try that, particularly as he's got apps in at all the local police departments...but who knows? He just didn't buy it w/ his hard earned money and I caught him at the right time....Personally, I'm a bit disturbed by these stories of soldiers whose families are buying military grade equipment to send their kids (optics, body armor etc.) because their issued stuff is sub-par or unobtanium.

Update: The ACOG belongs to the Feds.....maybe....A call to Trijicon confirmed the military purchased it. They sent me an email confirming same. However, calls to JBLM have failed (so far) to confirm that the Feds actually own it (records snafu). Trust me, I hit the right people, supply sgt. in charge of ACOGS, MP Investigator in charge of thefts of same, etc. The Pierce County Sheriffs office declined to help, stating that I'm a King Co. resident. The King Co. Sheriffs office declined to help stating that the transaction took place in Pierce Cty. The information from military officials is inconsistent. Some say, ACOGS are clearly marked. Others say no. No one can say w/ any certainty that the military has ever released any ACOGS as surplus. As of this writing I have contacted the kid (Specialist in 2nd @JBLM) and given him the opportunity to make a full refund. He now claims that he inadvertently gave me the wrong one. He's offered to give me the right one or a refund.....This is still plausible as they do issue these as personal equipment. However, this guy suddenly disabled all his social networking (Facebook etc.) pages yesterday. His FB pictured showed him proudly brandishing an AK-47 (Where have we seen pics like that this week?) The exchange will take place under camera surveillance of a Tacoma police officer in the TPD parking lot.....We'll see. Meawhile, I love the unit and will get a legit one of this model (TA31RCO-M150) one way or the other. I will post some definitive answers re: how to protect yourself from purchasing a stolen DOD unit....if I can get them. The information from the Feds is wholly inconsistent which is consistent w/ my knowledge and experience. I've worked for the Feds (twice), the State of WA and the City of Tacoma....The bigger the agency, the bigger the Clusterf*ck.
