Hi All,

I got my Oregon State Marine Board registration for my two (small) sailboats renewal today.

There seems to be something wrong:

1) My registration was off for one year for BOTH boats: Even though both were properly registered, with the registration expiring on December 31, 2015, the registration form said I was a year late, that the registration had expired a year ago...

2) Now for the best best part: My two year registration (which would only last a year, because I was a year delinquent) is now 50% higher than 2 years ago...

WTF?

I called the OR state Marine board and they weren't available to answer the phone even though it was their business hours. Several tries later I got a receptionist to tell me:

1) There were errors in paperwork sent out, but NO revised statements would be sent out.

2) Despite my not hearing anything about price increases for boat registration fees prior to the fact, I was told that there were LOTS of public meetings where Oregon boaters gleefully embraced higher fees...

(Really? Sounds like those other chances we were given to comment on impending legislation...)

I say this on top of the fact that licensing and other additional fees for my own personal business have gone up 600% this year (I kid you not.)

Who to blame: our current state legislature and our APPOINTED governor.

The same ones who brought us SB941.

Answer me this: who in their right mind would pay a bill that has NOT been amended IN WRITING based merely on verbal assurances that it will all work out fine? Especially when they want almost twice as much for half as long? But I was told to pay it anyway or face a citation.

I'm starting to feel a little harassed on a personal level.... my business..., my firearms....., and now my sailing....

I bought a used 12" aluminum boat with trailer at an estate sale this last summer in Portland and the boat was last registered in 1992 in Washington.
The estate sale folks gave me the title and all of the other necessary papers to prove that I'm the new owner.
I sent in my $72.00 for tags and title on July 22nd 2015. I received a letter from the Oregon Marine Board on 12/30/2015 stating that the title I was given was for a boat trailer and not for a boat.
They said that I needed to apply for a Washington title and then re-apply for an Oregon title.
I called them for over a week until someone finally answered the phone and told them to refund my money, as I would take the boat to the scrap yard before I pay for two titles on a $300 boat. The women said that I had to mail them a letter stating that I wanted a refund.
I mailed the letter to them the next day and I have yet to receive a check in the mail, even though I have talked to several people about it.
They claim that they have over 150,000 boats in Oregon and not enough people to manage.
The Oregon DMV manages million of autos and they get your title to you in 30 days.

jbett-

Talk to someone who is an independent agent who can deal with boat titles and is not part of the state government. Try calling Scott at Scokum Marine in Eugene, he knows his stuff: 541 463-0555.

State GOV are all the same no matter who is in charge. We The People keep getting screwed by registering any property we own (scratch that) we do not own anything because we have to pay fee's, penalties & taxes every year. So theoretically we do not own anything that is a major purchase!!!!!:mad::mad:

Jim, I think you really hit the nail on the head: I'm beginning to think that maybe I should have put this post in the Legal and Political section. It really doesn't matter who is nominally in charge in Salem: we are suffering from a thousand cuts and it is getting worse:

My point being that this current legislature in Salem seems to be really over extending itself in every way and I sincerely hope it comes back to bite them in November. There are just too many people being trampled regardless of their political affiliations.

It's not just sb 941 and the cut and paste Bloomberg bills being rubber stamped,

nor the dramatic increases in regulations and the costs of doing business as a small business owner in this state under the current legislature,

nor the absurd increases in fees for simple things like boat registration (anyone got other examples?)....

Combine these insults with the incredibly arrogant behavior and the misuse of "emergency" legislation by the current democrat majority in our state legislature - (just imagine how the dems would freak out if the republicans were in the majority and abusing emergency provisions to assure their pet bills couldn't be overturned by referendum) - with an appointed governor not responsible to anyone and I HOPE we have a recipe for change. I think I'm a pretty mellow and tolerant person, but I've had enough. I've never had a state legislature be so intrusive and harmful to me in a single session both personally and financially as last year's. I've never experienced anything like it and I'm not a young guy.

I can't imagine that there are not a huge number of voters who are extremely unhappy with the way things are going right now. I sure hope it comes back to haunt these fools in Salem come November. And I hope they never see it coming. (But I realize nothing will probably come of it. - sigh - )

The thing is,We ARE being harassed. the current government thinks they should have a hand in everything that goes on in our lives and how OUR money should be spent. they need to back the uckfa off and get the uckfa out. beginning to start sounding more and more like socialism to me...

(uckfa is pig latin for the F word for those who didnt catch on)

Oregon wanted $72.00 to tag your 12' boat for two years? Gawd, what are they gonna want for my 17.5? I remember them telling of the price increase, I just didn't pay much attention as I had fresh tags on the boat. It's not like there would be anything I could do about it anyway!

OSMB has never been an issue for me. Anytime I've called them a nice lady picked up and helped. Of course it's been a while so, there's that. I'd sure like to know where all the money is going that isn't being put into customer service....At OSP, Marine Board etc, etc, etc!

If you buy a boat in Oregon today, you will not receive your boats title/tags until July.
That's how backed up they are.
You have to call them and request a piece of paper from them that states that you own the watercraft and it's legally tagged for use on the water.
Expect to be harassed by the Coast Guard and Marine Sheriff when out enjoying your boat.

Maybe they harass you because of the little riveted tin can you fish from? :D In my case I don't get no respect from all the big sled owners due to my 17.5 Smoker Craft being riveted!

We need to meet up out there this year. I'm sure we've passed each other a time or four. At least keep each other posted on the "Bite" if nothing else. sure looking forward to it!

Nice fish uncle Si!

My best Springer last year was 26lbs.
While I was trolling behind one of those fancy $30,000 aluminum "I bought every bell & whistle you could tack on a boat show deluxe package deal" rigs, watching while the guy was busy playing with his expensive new wunderkind fish finder, that he had missed the Springer chewing on his herring.
I pulled up to the back of his boat, crossed over his wake and sure enough, the Springer that had eaten his bait came and took a nibble on mine.
I stripped off a bunch of line and let him take it whole. Bingo, I netted a beauty and the guy had no clue that he had missed that fish.
Last year you could not take your eyes off your pole they where biting that gentle.

You'd best just pay up like a good little peon, and reflect on the true nature of your relationship with the state: slavery. They are parasites, you are the host organism.

Who to blame: our current state legislature and our APPOINTED governor.

Uh, no. It was your and my ancestors, who neglected to tar and feather these bastards when they first proposed looting them:

"Indeed nations, in general, are not apt to think until they feel; and therefore nations in general have lost their liberty: For as violations of the rights of the governed, are commonly...but small at the beginning, they spread over the multitude in such a manner, as to touch individuals but slightly. Thus they are disregarded...They regularly increase the first injuries, till at length the inattentive people are compelled to perceive the heaviness of their burdens. They begin to complain and inquire - but too late. They find their oppressors so strengthened by success, and themselves so entangled in examples of express authority on the part of their rulers, and of tacit recognition on their own part, that they are quite confounded."
-- John Dickenson

We'll do better next time around, after the coming revolution.

:s0115: Oh yeah. A buddy I fish with out there some of the time was callin' me uncle Si. I'v got it growing again this year too.

I've heard that technique, get a funky bite and throw a couple of pulls to em', never tried it though. I have seen Wifey start getting bit and the leave it and then I get a bite a hook a fish.

I was happy last year to get four fish in eight trips, two on one day with three rods running. My poor buddy, this'll be his third year since he's been doing this and he's still springerless. I try to get him to copy my roll and brine, and keep his herring on ice or use some of mine, but he won't. I think he's just happy being on the water. :s0092:

I just paid $99 including fees to license my 20' sled. Trailer license is expired so I just took the plate off till I find the registration for it. It's annoying to have to go to DMV for the trailer and the State Marine Board for the boat to get everything licensed, but it's still the cheapest part of owning a boat.
