Second Amendment supporters have been so focused on this one little corner of the Bill of Rights that they've let the Fourth Amendment, which is supposed to protect citizens against unreasonable search and seizure, turn into dead letter.
This is a point that I've been worrying about a lot lately- and no one seems to be discussing it! The Supreme Court basically gutted the fourth amendment last month, with a precedent setting ruling that allows evidence acquired during an illegal search to be used in court.
This ruling, combined with the previous one that states that any device connected to the Internet has no reasonable expectation of privacy allows the government to basically walk into your private life via computer (not that they weren't already doing that anyway), phone, or even to just bust into your house on a whim. A cop can pull you over for no reason, search your car, and use whatever he finds against you - legally. I lived in NYC during the Giuliani years and bore witness to the type of abuse and thuggery that this kind of power lends itself to.
The funny thing is that the only Supreme Court justice who fought against these rulings was Sotomayor.
Anyway, the fourth amendment is dead now, welcome to the new police state. Hunter S. Thompson is rolling over in his grave.
