Hodgdon load data (online) has the top end of of HP38 at 5.6gr @ under 1k fps, stay under 1k fps and you should be fine with the lead in the oem barrel.

I could swear that when I was reloading .45 out of a G21 in an OEM barrel (200gr LSWC) that I was using 5.4gr of 231 but for the life of me I can't find it written down anywhere. I stopped using 231 because I couldn't find it a couple of years ago, you will be well served by hp38.
