Excellent info! While the riders should be lauded, my money for bravery goes to the guy that was up looking over the situation and lighting the lanterns - that was one brave guy acting under a lot of pressure. It should also be mentioned that matches were not invented until the early 1800s so must have used some cruder way to light the candles.

Probably either a thin strip of wood lit in a fire or a coal from the fire held by tongs.
