Self-defense shotguns should have short barrels. 18'' is ideal. Trap shooting requires longer barrels with screw-in chokes.

The most economical way is to purchase a single shotgun with 2 barrels. For example, you can buy 870 Express (6+1) with a 18'' barrel which would be a fine home defense weapon (I especially like the models with Knoxx recoil-reducing stocks, in 20ga or 12ga) plus a longer barrel for trap fun. Takes seconds to swap.
