One of those simple pleasures of life is going for a vigorous walk, day hike, or even bicycling. In recent memory I've been enjoying doing so for cardiovascular exercise, but also times of solitude. Such outings are good for the body and soul, but, like so many activities, going armed is necessary. I've found light, simple carry pieces are just the ticket.

What handguns do you carry when going on such excursions? Any particular loadings? Is your chief concern hostile wildlife, two-legged varmints, or some combination of both?

Thanks for sharing. ☺️

To answer my own question, this summer, I've been mainly carrying one of these three in a leather holster for the given model:

Salir a caminar.jpg
Top to bottom: S&W 632 UC in .32 H&R Magnum. Walther PPK/S in .380 ACP / 9㎜ Corto. S&W 325PD in .45 ACP / .45 Auto Rim. (Of the three, the forty-five has had the most use. Large caliber and I really like the moon-clip feeding mechanism. The one in thirty-two is pretty new; it is so light, it is like it is not even there when carrying.)

In my best "World's most interesting man" voice...
I don't always carry ...but when I do it is....
My Colt series '70 Government Model in .45 ACP..... :D

Depending on the circumstances or situation , my loading is either ...
230 grain FMJ...or 230 grain Speer Gold Dot Hollow points.

My chief concern is more of a two legged varmint...never really been worried about other critters...even in bear country.
Please do not take the above as a disregard for bears or other "dangerous" critters....
I keep a clean camp ...stay situationally aware ...and understand that I am in their back yard so to speak.

Walking the dog(s) down my rural road, a 3" .357 Magnum with 180-grain Buffalo Bore hardcast with a spare speedloader will suffice. Cougars and nasty pit mixes that get off their property are often seen in my neighborhood.

Longer walks in the woods or unknown areas, an 18+1 round 9mm with 124 grain +P JHPs and a spare mag

While we are in short pants and T-shirt weather.

My Kel Tec P-32. Because it's small and compact, and not very heavy. Rrrrright.....it doesn't pull my pants down. LOL.

Aloha, Mark

As most times depends on weather / so dress. When its HOT pocket carry the gun that I always have. LCPII in .380. Often even when cold if I am just out for a quick trip around and want a coat pocket carry still use my old KT P-11 that was purchased just for this reason. LOVE walking with the dog and sadly too many times when I have to fight off some asshats aggressive, loose dog, the owner then is VERY angry that I did so. Several times its gotten "heated" enough that I had my hand on a gun that they could not see. Thankfully never had to use it for this but, so many running around now who just have no control of their emotions. :(
Then there is the roaming mental cases that are often high on top of already not being well put together. Makes it so I LONG ago just never leave the home without a carry.

I have a Taurus 856 ultra light in jail for a few more days so underwood XTP JHP .38sp x6 most likely.

Will replace a couple of fully simi auto's I rotate thru.

I'm not worried about to much but as the days get shorter my pit bull mix is only about 50 lbs and is such a sweet heart that the coyotes that roam the neighborhood at night would be on her before she realized they weren't friendly dogs, so that is mostly why I carry on walks in town.

Out of town and it's always a bigger gun and if I'm far enough out it's also a long gun and one of my dozens of hunting/bushcraft/fighting fixed blades.

The "city Coyotes" are a HUGE problem now in many places. They adapt so damn well to living around humans. When they are hungry enough pets are a meal to them. The ones around me are so well fed they seem to only be a problem for our chickens when they are out. About a year ago was walking one of my dogs that is about 10#'s was not paying much attention and when I looked up she was about 20 yards away from me and a Coyote was about 10 feet from her
There was that split second where your brain has to process what you are seeing and I drew. The quick motion scared the wild dog who moved further away and I called my dog who wanted to follow back to me. It looked like the wild one was more curious about her than wanting to make a meal out of her since they have an unlimited supply of easy food here. Still scared hell out me. For a good while after that I paid MUCH closer attention. Several times I would see what I guessed is the same wild one following us but it stayed quite a ways off. Still was creepy.

First choice for me biking is p938 in front pocket in Alabama holster. Second is p365x in IWB holster. If its hiking then grand power q1 in iwb holster. If doing something at night I'm often fairly close to vehicle and have a Brn-180 sbr or mp5 clone in sling pack. Or sometimes simply a g34 with USW chassis under the seat.

Really depends on the mood.

Common choices are as follows.

Canik TP9 SFX 20rds 9mm 147gr with spare mag and spare mag of 20rds 115gr TUI ammo.

Glock 40 15rds 180gr 10mm with spare mag and spare mag of 125gr TUI ammo.

Taurus 44 6shot 44mag with 200gr JHP and 2 spare strips of 200gr JHP plus 2 spare strips of 200gr TUI ammo.

Ruger RXM 15rds 9mm 147gr with spare mag and spare mag of 115gr TUI ammo.

I guess I am a woosy. For walking in familiar territory or my nightly bicycle ride I almost grab the LCP. My daily carry is the DB9 but the LCP is much more amenable for bicycling. Anything heavier than the LCP is way too annoying.

If I am exploring someplace new I bring my DB9.

I used to bring along an 80lb fury lethal weapon that would confidently confront any person or beast. She also would stay right by my side on my bicycle.

It was MUCH harder to train my girlfriend to walk on the left side of me (because I carry in my right pocket).

Ruger LCP Max in either a Desantis Superfly, the pocket holster that Ruger provided, or with an attached gun clip clipped onto my belt with my LCP Max between my belt, and my pants.

Shorts and t-shirt - Ruger LCP 380 in a pistol pocket.

Next step up is a S&W Shield 9mm with Rem Golden Saber +P

Next up is SIG P228 with same 9mm ammo.

In jacket weather, either my P220 .45 or Colt Commander .45 with 230 grain Golden Saber.
