I have seen these for years at my grandparents home. When they moved I inherited them. Any info would be massively appreciated.

Easy, the 5 inch shell casing is for the older Dhalgren breach loading "standard" multi purpose 5" (5/38) pedestal mount guns, like the early "Standard Battleships" and others ships used, and pre dated the auto loader 5/50 by a several years! The smaller 3" is an early anti aircraft gun made by Colt Heavy manufacturing/Fairbanks-Morse, usually single mounted same as the 5" standard! These predate the complete adoption of the BOFORS 40 MM Auto Canon mounts and were to be found all over the fleet on just about every ship that floated!

Many Battle ships ( and early Cruisers) had both types mounted in casements along side the hull, or Barbets installed in the super structure, speed and range were not there strengths!

If anything....it's certainly worth it's weight as scrap brass.

Other uses....I've seen in the past. Well, make a table lamp, umbrella stand or ash tray out of it.

Aloha, Mark

Dad is retired Navy, and one of his Ship's Machinists made him a set of Cofveve mugs out of the 5" shell casings they had aboard! Pretty heavy, and they wouldn't slide around on the table much in rough seas! :)
