I'm looking to get an AR with a little more power that works well with a longer barrel without breaking the bank with ammo costs. Does anyone have experience with Wolf 6.5 Grendel?

Oh, ok. Wolf meaning the manufacturer. I thought you meant some kind of new wildcat or something. :D

This is just my humble opinion, so take it for what it's worth.

If you're going to go with a long range cartridge, I'd skip the Russian made steel cased stuff. Accuracy and consistency will be crap.

Find some brass cased ammo at least so it'll be better quality, and you'll be able to hand load it at some point if you choose to go that route.

Might be good for a SHTF stash or barrel break in and general plinking, but as stated above, but Wolf of any caliber isn't consistent enough to be trying for tight groups.

It's decent ammo for the price, but don't expect sub-moa groups. Some barrels just don't like it for some reason, but mine seem to shoot it okay.

The best deal on ammo used to be the Hornady American Gunner from Sportsman's Warehouse, at $140/200 rds. You were getting good brass cased ammo for the same cost as new brass by itself. I heard the price went up recently, though.

I'm under no illusion that it will be sub-MOA ammo, I'm wanting 6.5 for its increased muzzle energy rather then it's precision. The Wolf would be for plinking and other shooting where higher volume with less precision is needed. I'll still get some better ammo for precision.

That was my thinking, as well. I don't need premium ammo for dirt shooting or ringing steel at 200 yards, but have the option if I want to shoot further, or need a better bullet for hunting.

@Will_White

I have a 6.5 Grendel I built of the finest bits last year and tore apart today because I never get out to shoot it. Happy to help you with parts for your build or Hornady ammo, even a box of 15 magazines at those proverbial prices too low to share with everyone.

Life is generally too good for wolf.

lemme know if u wanna sell me some mags

You might want to take Lucky SG up on his offer. I've seen the rifle and magazines in question, and it's all top notch!

Lucky SG has good taste in firearms. :s0155:

I don't need the best bits, although I might hit him up for the magazines. I've got a PSA upper going on the top lower when it gets finished. I'm probably just going to have iron sights at first too.

The only niche I can see the 6.5g filling is getting a little more distance out of a 15, and you'd want premium ammo for that. If you are looking for more punch and cheap ammo, a x39 would be a better option IMO.
