After seeing some of the AR builds on here I thought it would be fun to build one for my dad. What else would I need other than a lower receiver, stock, trigger and grip, barrel, carrier group, and fore grip. I am just looking for the bare necessities to make a working, somewhat esthetically pleasing AR-15. Thanks a bunch guys and gals!

lower receiver, stock, trigger and grip, barrel, carrier group, and fore grip.

*Assuming you want a standard A2 FSB and handguard:

Upper Receiver assembly (will include forward assist and Ejection port cover)
GI Barrel nut*
Delta Ring*
Weld Spring*
Snap Ring*
Handguard cap*
Get a barrel with FSB already installed (don't attempt it on your own)*
Sling Swivel (if not already on the barrel assembly)*
Sling Swivel Rivet*
Gas Tube
Gas tube pin
Muzzle device
Receiver Extension (Buffer Tube)
Receiver Extension Nut (Castle Nut)
Buffer
Receiver End Plate
Action Spring
Charging Handle
Rear Sight

And a standard LPK contains the following:
Pivot Pin & Rear Takedown Pin
Two Pivot/Takedown Detent Pins
Two Pivot/Takedown Detent Springs
Bolt Catch
Bolt Catch Plunger
Bolt Catch Roll Pin
Bolt Catch Spring
Magazine Catch Assembly
Magazine Catch Spring
Magazine Release Button
Safety Semi-Auto Selector
Safety Detent Selector
Selector Detent Spring
Buffer Retainer Pin
Buffer Retainer Spring
Pistol Grip
Pistol Grip Screw
Pistol Grip Lock Washer
Trigger Guard
Trigger Guard Roll Pin
Trigger Guard Set Screw
Semi-Auto Trigger
Trigger Spring
Two Trigger/Hammer Pins
Semi-Auto Hammer w/ J-Pin Assembly
Hammer Spring
Semi-Auto Disconnector
Disconnector Spring

A copy of TM 9-1005-319-23&P and the proper tools (or a buddy with that stuff)

Sweet. Thanks man! I really hope you copied and pasted that.

One way to go is just to get a complete kit. Palmetto is a good place for entry level kits. This one has everything you would need except for the lower receiver to do a build. THey have several kits to choose from
<broken link removed>

You can also order a receiver (which needs to be shipped to a dealer for background check) or buy one local.

It looks like you are in Portland. The other option is to go to one of the many very good gun stores and say you want a complete kit for a build and they will set you up

Good stores that focus on AR15's will have all the parts for a build include the following

AR-15 Guns Portland
Oregon Arms & Ammunition

I am also starting my first AR build. I found the Palmetto State Armory Lower Build Kit to have good reviews and low cost. I am currently shopping around locally for a stripped lower and will probably order a completed upper instead of trying to build it the first time. I still need get some tools together, I think they are probably worth investing in considering I plan on building an AR 10 after this one is completed.
